install and run nas4free to usb external 2.5" drive

Post by moblix »

I am not sure if this it the right place for this.

when setting up my first nas using nas4fee i had planned on using a pci via 6421a card for the bootable hardrive but my nas had other ideas.

during the whole process i had plugged in a external usb hard drive which is basically this cheap enclosure (this one seems a bit newer than mine) with a 2.5" old drive from a PS3 (toshiba).

When the live cd asked me where to install the OS to it saw this drive on usb so i installed it there. so basically now nas4free os FULL boots and runs from this usb hardrive leaving me the internal sata and pci for main drives but having a full install running from a mechanical/sdd drive and not flash. I had not come across info saying this was possible while setting it up. Maybe it got lost in the transfer of the forum, but anyhow i thought it was useful info.

the chip on the device is a (JMicron) JM 20329.

while NAS4Free will load the OS to a usb drive
it does not necessarily follow that the computer can boot from that USB port.

it all depends on how versatile the Bios is
even PATA and SATA expansion cards will not boot drives with some Bios.

[too much B and not enough io]

these almost never fail

also available in SATA and 44 pin PATA

do not do virtual memory [swap] from flash drives
it will wear them excessively

that is why the embedded boots to a ram drive
if the USB boot from a Hdd adapter works
and you are booting the embedded ver.
install the USB Hdd and set the spin down for 5 minutes
do not mount the drive

it should load the OS to memory and there after spin down
