Virtual Nas4Free Test Server Install

Post by innocuous »

Hi all,

Prior to taking the plunge with my production server, I am keen to install Nas4Free on a virtual machine which mimics the 8 HDs and data layout so that I can test the move to Nas4Free, learn how to install, and ensure that I have a solid upgrade process prior to loading Nas4Free.

Does anyone have a good guide and top tips as to the simplest way to load NAs4Free virtually?

I have tried Hyper-V and VirtualBox but am having issues getting the virtual HDs to appear. Has anyone done this successfully?

J

PS - i wont be using ZFS so that should simplify things significantly hopefully :-)

As an aside - I am not wedded to Virtual Box or Hyper-V. If you have experience with another VM then please let me know.

Thanks very much,

Jon

are you doing VMs from Windows? I've never had any problems importing disks from within nas4free on vbox@windows

I am using VMware ESXi 5.1. For my setup I am using pcie passthru for the disk controller and nic. I just added a VM using freebsd 64bit profile. 4 virtual CPUs, 4GB ram, 4GB virtual HD for os, 3 x 1TB RAIDZ.

Should be able to see your disks in disk management. Just click clear config and import.
