backing up, network name is no longer available

Post by shmish »

Hello,
I'm not sure which forum is the best place for this post but I thought I'd try here first.
I have Nas4free 9.1.0.1, with a zfs pool.
I would like to backup up my data to an external usb drive. To do this, I use Acronis TrueImage. In it, I choose the NAS files as the sourse and the usb drive for saving the data. Acronis is giving me constant errors: "The specified network name is no longer available."
Clicking retry lets the process continue on.

I suspect this is not an Acronis problem, but that the communication between NAS4Free and my local PC (where the usb drive is mounted) drops out intermittently.

If anyone has suggestions about this issue or would like to point me to a different forum (network? SMB? ZFS?), I'd appreciate it.

thanks

bad idea to use acronis to backup , and bad idea use a USB disk.

If you want to backup to a USB disk, remember that must be allways on (if you plug off), when reinsert, not allways have the same ID, so you need manually detec what disk is your USB disk.

To backup use rsync: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... uide:rsync

http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... uide:rsync

PD: I use freeFilesync to have a sync my PC and my NAS ( So have 2 copies of all files, one in my desktop PC and one in my NAS)
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks.
I have used FreeFileSync as well. I originally didn't want to use it this time because I don't know how (or if) I can automatically setup folders to sync. In other words, I don't want to sync all folders and it's annoying to have to go through and select the ones I want every time.

However, I also get the same error with freefilesync: the specified network name is no longer available

I just do occasional backups, so I'm not too worried about the USB drive aspect. I don't think that is the problem here, although I could be wrong.

perhaps your NAS need some tunes to avoid memory/NIC problems, please post your log to see what happens:

I think I may have had a problem with my MTU setting. I changed it from 1500 to 1450. I found this information from viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1702

revise / change & test your send & receive buffers, and enable AIO, and please post how you have configured SAMBA

Here is my configuration.
Max Protocol: SMB2
local master browser yes
time server yes
large read/write enabled
use sendfile not enabled
AIO enabled
AIO read/write size 4096

I originally had send/receive buffer set to 64240. This gave a read/write speed of 29.4/30.3 MB/sec
I now have send/receive buffer set to 131072. This gives a read/write speed of 84.1/70.9 MB/sec

I'm using NAS performance tester v1.4, file size = 400mb, 5 loops.

I've tried enabling sendfile but it unchecks after the reboot.

But I'm not sure if this speed test tells me anything about my original problem of the network name being unavailable sporadically.

thanks

YES, I find the reason because your SMB reboot, normally is a misconfigured/annoning config or a memory problem.

PD: network name is no longer available, because your SMB reboot

Is there anything to be done to find the config problem or memory problem?

I received the network name no longer available during the middle of a transfer, clicking "retry" would let the transfer continue. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with a reboot. After changing the MTU, I haven't had this message since.
