High Load cycle, imminent disk fail ?

Post by kenZ71 »

So in another post I saw where if wdidle is not run it can lead to high Load Cycle which in turn leads to disk failure. Or am I misreading stuff?

From my WD20EARS-00MVWB0 I get this in the SMART logs....

193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 602807

If this is an issue I have to wonder why the SMART reports are pass / fail. Perhaps a grade or % status would be more helpfull. Although I do understand drives can and do fail at anytime with little notice.

The specifications state 600k load/unload cycles, therefore FAIL. If everything else is stable and in the norm, I would ignore it. However, this means you will have to ignore that specific parameter when you do the Status check, otherwise it will be always FAIL and you will not see any other change or warning.

WDIdle doesn't work anymore on the most recent (<= 15 months) Greens, so don't count on it.

What is a load / unload cycle ?

Sure glad I am a paranoid backup freak :)

i have seen a lot of wd greens fail. because of the lcc.
when they fail they fail suddenly and cant be accessed anymore.
so i would start replacing them.

Do not be afraid, here are my wd green ....

193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 751839
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 2283815
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 843563
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 850500
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 2283863
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 960763

I changed for other reasons that were more than 6 million of Load_Cycle_Count.

196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0 This is the only parameter that is important to monitor, soon it changes you have to think hard disk to change quickly.

But look at this:
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 117 111 000 Old_age Always - 30 (30° Celsius)
For WD green it is important to remain under 40 ° Celsius, and if possible to remain at a stable temperature.

Thanks sleid, makes me feel better. Maybe I should get to know snapshots better and see if it can use them to recover data changed since my last backup. I swap a drive and resilver once a month then store that drive offsite so I should be OK if anything bad happens.

How can a drive be maintained at a stable temperature ? No matter how good your cooling system the environment temp will still fluctuate some.

This is a Lian-Li case with a 150mm fan blowing sideways cage 6 drives.
The temperature is between 19 ° and 28 ° and the discs between 28° and 35° Celsius.

28°C is slightly too cold, better stay at about 35°C. In doubt, 30-35°C in order to be sure that under load you are in the 35-40°C range.
