HDD recommendations RAIDZ2 ?

Post by paulchen25 »

Hi
I want to replace my old drives and by this chance upgrade may FreeNas 0.7 (using UFS) into a system with NAS4Free and RaidZ2 with 4 HDD drives (makes 8TB-Nas).
Usage of the system is mainly storage of photo raw files and it's not always on. so litte power consumtion is nice more improtant is safty and low noise low heat.

Thinking about this drives:
Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 SATA III 4TB aka HGST H3IK40003272SE 4 TB
or
Seagate HDD.15 ST4000DM000 (4 TB) (cheapest)
or
Western Digital Red SATA III 4TB (WD40EFRX)
or
a mixture 2 and 2 of a kind (to not depend on the same production ...)

My board is a Gigabyte from 2009 GA-MA78GM-S2H with 5x SATA 3 GB/s connections (so i don't know if that is limiting the transfer speed anyway, and HDD high tranfer rates are not the point )

What drives should i get? Any tipps?

Thank you.
Robert

actually your choice should be between the
seagate nas drive (ST4000VN000) not ST4000DM000 and the wd nas drive.

these drives are meant for 24/7 operations.

also since you want to run raidz2 data integrity seems to be very important for you.
please read this regarding ecc memory
http://forums.freenas.org/threads/so-yo ... ons.12276/
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Just go to http://www.storagereview.com/best_drives and read the reviews for WD Red and Seagate NAS.
HP Microserver N40L, 8 GB ECC, 2x 3TB WD Red, 2x 4TB WD Red
XigmaNAS stable branch, always latest version
SMB, rsync
