One disk is maybe close to death?

Post by ChriZathens »

Hello, guys!
After some hardware issues I encountered (more info here...) problems seem to keep coming lol
Yesterday afternoon I turned on my NAS and ada3 showed as missing, thus rendering my first pool as degraded.
I had no time to deal with it, so simply shut down the NAS.
Today I turned it on again and pool was again online and the disk was there.... :?
But after a few hours the NAS crashed.
After a hard reset the machine was back online, but the Pool was again at a degraded state...
It is a Samsung 1.5TB hdd (checked with seagate's warranty tool and disk is out of warranty unfortunately). I will probably go get a 2TB WD RED (after making sure that it is not a cabling issue)
But my question is this: Why is the NAS crashing because of the disk? (I think this is not supposed to happen, is it?)
My Nas
  1. Case: Fractal Design Define R2
  2. M/B: Supermicro x9scl-f
  3. CPU: Intel Celeron G1620
  4. RAM: 16GB DDR3 ECC (2 x Kingston KVR1333D3E9S/8G)
  5. PSU: Chieftec 850w 80+ modular
  6. Storage: 8x2TB HDDs in a RaidZ2 array ~ 10.1 TB usable disk space
  7. O/S: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4.6625 -amd64 embedded
  8. Extra H/W: Dell Perc H310 SAS controller, crosflashed to LSI 9211-8i IT mode, 8GB Innodisk D150SV SATADOM for O/S

Backup Nas: U-NAS NSC-400, Gigabyte MB10-DS4 (4x4TB Seagate Exos disks in RaidZ configuration - 32GB RAM)

Hello, b0ssman, and thanks for your reply...
I will do so in about 2-3 hours, when I get home....
I mentioned about the cabling, though, because until recently, when I was using n4f x64 full installed on an old hdd, i was expperiencing the same issue.
After purchasing a flash dom and isntalled the OS there the issue dissapeared.
A few days ago, the flash dom exploded, so now I have embedded from a usb stick.
This leads to the suspicion that the actual problem may not be the disk, but either bad usb, or bad cabling (now that i think about it, it is most likely the usb stick)

ada3
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x003e 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 37

means you have a bad cable.

ada4, ada5 ada6 ada7 are a spinpoint f4. did you patch the firmware? if not that could be the explanation for the values

Yes I thought it could be a bad cable, so I replaced it with a new one.
initiated a scrub which runs for about 4 hours now and so far seems to be stable.
I also purchased a WD red, just in case...
The samsungs have the correct firmware (which was the same version as the problematic if this is what you meant)
From what you saw from my smart values, should I be worried about any of my disks?

Re: One disk is maybe close to death?

Post by b0ssman »

the drives have no reallocated sectors which would be a sure sign of failure.

however the samsung G-Sense_Error_Rate error rate would worry me.
G-Sense Error Rate
The count of errors resulting from externally induced shock & vibration.

all my samsung disk have a value of 0 here. Maybe your disks are getting high vibration in the case.

This is strange...
All disks are inside the same case, using case's trays which all have rubber mounts (see image)
Image
Anyways, besides this, disks appear to be in relatively good condition? (considering they are been spinning for over 3 years...)

Regarding the missing disk issue: after replacing the cable and initiating a scrub, process ended without surprises..

Perhaps the WD Red was not needed after all but I feel more comfortable having a spare anyways...

Quick update on the issue: After changing the sata cable, things are back to normal, even after a stress test of 9TB scrubbing..
And a quick tip for everyone: If you change a faulty cable, cut it in half and throw it to the trash immediately... If you don't there is a good chance you'll forget it was faulty and use it again....
