Ways to speed up directory discovery?

I am using my NAS as a media server for my home. One of my directories has about 800 folders in it and it takes about 10 seconds for Windows machines to display the full listing of folders in this directory. Is there any way to speed up this process? I have a feeling I am grabbing at straws here, but the answer is always no if you never ask

Aaaand after reading a few posts down, I found this viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5401

I disabled DOS attributes. I will post back to see if this fixes my problem.
