Hard disk that is not always connected

Post by Amt0571 »

Hello,

I have a 2TB hard drive that for various reasons I need to keep out of the NAS when not in use. I have it mounted on a SATA backplane, so it's really easy to remove.

This hard drive, when plugged in, has a samba share assigned on NAS4Free. There are 3 more disks in the machine that get assigned as such:

ada0: the 2TB drive that's not always plugged.
ada1: an old IDE HD with a samba share and another partition where NAS4Free is installed.
ada2: a 500GB HD with another samba share
ada3: another 500GB HD with a samba share

The problem I'm having is that when I remove the drive in question, freenas moves all the disks and assigns them this way:

ada0: an old IDE HD with a samba share and another partition where NAS4Free is installed.
ada1: a 500GB HD with another samba share
ada2: another 500GB HD with a samba share

As you can see, they all change their ID, but the samba shares and mount points don't change accordingly.

Is there an easy way to solve this problem? it's driving me nuts having to recreate all the shares everytime I plug/unplug the disk.

Thanks!!

Change Sata order to convert ada0 in ada4 (last disk, not first disk

Search for shif disk syndrome in BSD.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks! I'll try it as soon as I finish adding all my hard drives :)
