unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing something?
I built a Freenas box (embedded) several years ago - Interl Atom motherboard, 1 GB RAM, using flash drive for boot.
In reading the forum, it appears I should be able to download the x86 embedded IMG and use the 0.7.2 GUI to perform a firmware upgrade. However, when I do this I get an error "The uploaded image file is not for this platform (i386-embedded)." This occurs with the IMG file name "NAS4Free-x86-embedded-9.1.0.1.847.img"
Here is the basic system information of my system:
Version 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191)
Built on Sun Oct 9 19:21:38 JST 2011
OS Version FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE-p7 (revision 199506)
Platform i386-embedded on Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D510 @ 1.66GHz
Am I misunderstanding the forums and documentation? Is a GUI upgrade from 0.7.2 not possible?

YOU CAN NOT Upgrade by WebGUI from 0.7 to 9.1.hbueno wrote:In reading the forum, it appears I should be able to download the x86 embedded IMG and use the 0.7.2 GUI to perform a firmware upgrade. But you can do a fresh install, and restore your previosly saved config when boot properly.
And do normal webgui updates to never versions when done. (from 9.1 to 9.x)
Please read simmilar post on Forum: viewforum.php?f=16

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
Thanks for the clarification. I did read many posts on the forum, but was unable to find a definitive answer.
Next step is to figure to how to upgrade. My NAS box does not have a CDROM. Are there instructions on how to build an embedded system on a flash drive? The documentation on the site seems to focus on using the ISO with a CD.

you can create the embeded Flash on every PC that you want.
EG: You can create in the desktop PC and once done, use in your NAS
PD: You only need to copy apropiate *.img to your USB Stick, this can be done in your desktop PC.
I use : http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/files/ to do it.

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
Happy New Year to all!
I finally got around to attempting the upgrade. I was able to write the embedded 64-bit image to a flash drive, set IP address and then log on to the GUI. However, when I try to restore the config.xml, it says "The configuration could not be restored. Invalid file format."
What now?

use new button in disk webgui to "Clear config and import disk".hbueno wrote:What now?
Once done if are a ZFS pool go to ZFS tools and syncronize your detected pool and your actual webgui.
whith this you have your data back, now you only need to configur by hand the rest ( SNB shares, ftp, etc...)
and read other user experience upgrading: viewforum.php?f=16

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
OK, I was able to complete the upgrade of my embedded system from 0.7.2 to the latest version.
To help others, I will summarize my steps:
1. Before starting, save a copy of the FreeNAS config to an XML file. The text of the XML file should be sufficient to help you re-enter all settings after the upgrade. If you do not feel comfortable with the XML file, I suppose you could tale a screenshot of every configuration setting for later reference. The config XML file is not compatible and cannot be imported to restore the settings once the system is running 9.x.
2. Remove and keep your original flash drive in a safe place.
3. Download the desired IMG file
4. Using Win32DiskImager, "burn" the image to the new flash drive. Note that the IMG that is downloaded cannot be used as-is. It must FIRST be decpompressed (I used WinRAR) and then renamed with an IMG filename extension. Otherwise, the image will be written without errors, but it will not boot.
5. Boot the NAS with the new USB flash drive and configure network settings using the console menu.
6. Log on to the WebGUI and Clear config and import disk. The RAID status may show as Degraded but in my case, all data was accessible. It took a few hours for a rebuild.
7. All other settings must be re-entered manually. Use Notepad or other text editor to view the XML file. It can be used as a guide to restore all settings.

congratulations, only add that normally FreeNAs 7.x can be upgrade automatically, only few version are not possible, and I think that yours is one of affected ones.

Wasn't this the latest Version before daoyama moved the N4F to FreeBSD 9 ???hbueno wrote: Version 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191)
So shouldn't this version be a supported version for automatic update then ?
Anyone with more information about this ?

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
sorry, you are right, this is what Daoyama say in readme:
- * Upgrading FreeNAS 7 server?
==============================
This version supports upgrading from FreeNAS 0.7.2 or 0.7.5.
The supported lowest config version is 8.9. (0.7.2.5246)
Versions older than 0.7.2.5246 are not supported.
Also, restoring FreeNAS config is never supported.
The password in FreeNAS config is not changed.
If you want, change it, use option "3) Reset WebGUI Password" of Console setup.
First boot of NAS4Free after upgrading from FreeNAS,
it takes special convert mode for NAS4Free config 1.0.
Once it finished, you can't downgrade to FreeNAS!
Don't forget create backup configuration of NAS4Free after upgrading!
- v9.6 config is forever marked as a blacklist.

current backup'ed config:
we are current on nas4free v1.7 - so i assume v9.6 is one of the last/latest freenas
since Nas4free we're count up again from 1.0
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<nas4free>
<version>1.7</version>

IIRC count started from 1.0 when n4f 9.0.1.1 came out.
But before n4f 9.0.1.1 we had n4f 9.0.0.1...
v9.6 config was part of one of the latest n4f 9.0.0.1 releases

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
I could use some clarification on the restore part. Several places reference saving /backing up your config file, yet in a situation where I'm re-installing NAS4Free 9.x, does this mean I can not use my xml conf file from my .7x version?
Is it because the version difference is so great that the config file for that 'old' version is incompatible?
If that is true then when can I use a saved config file to restore from? When it's in the same major version group (ie: 8, 9, etc.)
I was truly hoping I could use my config file to restore from but it's looking more and more when I re-install I will have to start from scratch.

Re: unable to upgrade 0.7.2 to latest - am I missing somethi
you can only use first time, Nas4Free detect that is an old config and convert to new model config, in the conversin some features can be lost, but data and disk normally are well converted.marklyn wrote: does this mean I can not use my xml conf file from my .7x version?

If you upgrade from 0.7 to 9 you only need to do this conversion one time.
