NO!
I do not want to see anything like: Windows 8 Home Screen!
Hate that OS, MS tried to re-invent the wheel with it! Why?

Actually my opinion is that simple is better...
It has nothing to do with windows and ms styling choices..
My guess is that OP would prefer something like synology's webui
Image
Not bad at all (in fact I like it a lot), but IMHO unnecessary for a NAS that just runs 99% of its life. You use the webui to set a few stuff and then hardly access it anymore.
Devs in an open source project like n4f, already offer their free time. It is better to consume this time in essential functional tasks, rather than styling the webui
I believe that currect GUI is perfect, simple and elegant, anyways...

I had actually tried a modified synology firmware for my backup nas (n40l)
The webui is really beautiful, but regardless I returned right back to n4f...

My only suggestion for the web interface would be to make the menu easier to use on touch screens. Currently, the main top menu relies on a mouse hover to reveal sub-menu choices. That "hover" is hard if not impossible to do on touch screens. I can do it with the stylus on my Galaxy Note 10.1, but not on my Galaxy S3 or other tablets. Simple solution without doing an unnecessary total redesign would be have a page with a full menu tree, or have a "click" action on the top-level menu go to a page that has the sub-menu options.

It works on my S3, albeit a bit tricky.. a long press + back does the trick. But yes, an alternative interface would be nice.
9.2.0.1.972 x86 full, AMD Athlon@1.917GHz 3GB, (apcupsd).

Well guys, with the recent attacks and the other development tasks including finetuning and correction of errors, there might be other priorities for development work with N4F to be done first. Think a working NAS usually doesn't require so much maintaining after the first setup.

if you want a hacked up Web GUI run FreeNAS.. there's a reason many of us like NAS4free, simple but effective interface that lets you set up a NAS and just use it..
