My little NAS

Post by andreaz7ß »

Hello.

Here a picture of my rack. The Nas4Free Server is an Asus AT5ION-T with an U3S6 Card. Inside of it are only 2x2TB harddiscs
as ZFS mirror (WD Red), more to come. The frameless SATA backplane inside is an IcyDock for 4 HDs within 3 Slots.

The lamptron is the fan-controller for the whole rack. The tempdisplays are used for temp inside and temp outside the
rack (the frame is made a wood atm.. :) )

The left top of the rack is a bit dusty, forgive me.. :) Need to cleanup that thing it seems (only viewable on the foto, not in real) :x .

Will do some more fotos from the inside, when i open it up for cleaning.

Regards,
Andreas

This one is just 600 too, so i left the backplate open and covered only the upper 3 HU and the sides of the cases so that all the
connections on the backsides are out of the rack. The cases are out of the rack for alike 2cm on the backside. But its thats not
too bad, cause it throw out the warm air off the rack no inside. So only the switch and the seperate psu (for the fans in the top, the
temperaturedisplays, lights and such stuff) will make the rack warm at the inside. But i still need suply fresh air from the outside.
So i made a 1HU like "bridge" on the bottom, on it there is one 4HE Case (my tv Server) and the other one (also 4HE) is the nas.
The fans in the top (4 120mm Ultra Kaze) pull the fresh air from the bottom and throw it out at the top. Works well.. :)

I only can give that 12HU Rack a try, cause i live in a small appartment. In time i move to bigger rooms, i will exchange it with
a bigger one, i guess.. :)

4U 36HDDs!? 3,5"? Ugh... I believe that will become costy.. :)

Andreas

The future plan for my racks is where there was a door, as i rent out the appartment downstair it can be done like yours.
Never thought about it but it can be done your way.
See a shop is selling 24 bay rack server chassis at 1000$ less then i was seeing.
Not so nice but works the same way

When i am in luck i may have the possibility to get my hands on such 2meters racks for a nice price.
Sure, they are used then, but they are used within a data center, so not a big deal, they appear kinda
new. Mostly they come from rittal and bring a whole management system (temp, Alarm, Dooropen
contact, power Monitoring)... You should keep open your eyes, if such a datacenter will move,
they often sell those racks then, instead of transport them.

The one i got is waaaaaay old. It is so old, it got proprietary screwholes and other the standard
grating nuts. But as long i got enough from them to screw the switch and patchpanel into it, im good
with it.

Here is the full one. The display on the bottom still need an idea to build it inside one of the 5,25"
Slots - but i'm laaaaaazy... :)
