Can't get UFS ID error

Post by dildon »

Hi all. Trying my best to salvage data off of an external drive. It was attached as a UFS volume on a Nas4Free machine. Upon upgrading machines and attempting to create a mount point, I'm getting the following errors.

The following input errors were detected:

Wrong partition type or partition number.
/dev/da0s1: Can't get UFS ID.
dumpfs: /dev/da0s1: could not find special device

I scanned the disk using UFS File Explorer, but it game me a [Parent unknown] directory structure (pictured), which I have no idea what that means. The previous Nas4Free setup is gone. Am I effed? Is there another method of grabbing these files?

Hi
If disk formatted under nas4free, you must mount it as GPT partition, not mbr
check by command

Code: Select all

ls dev | grep da0

Thanks for the reply alexey.
I tried mounting as GPT partition, but got the same error
Also, I tried entering in the command in, but did not seem to get any results. Sorry, noob over here.

perhaps do you upgrade to latest 9.2.x.x?

if yes , you need to do a new fresh full install and recreate partitions, of course your actual data on second partition is gone.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Don't know what previous version I was running before, but I'm running 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 847) on a LiveCD currently. Please link me to a better version to try out if needed.
Also, don't know if this is relevant, but I pulled this from Diagnostics|Information|Partitions:

Device /dev/da0 - LaCie d2 quadra

******* Working on device /dev/da0 *******
parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are:
cylinders=121601 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl)

Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1
parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are:
cylinders=121601 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl)

Media sector size is 512
Warning: BIOS sector numbering starts with sector 1
Information from DOS bootblock is:
The data for partition 1 is:

LiveCD do not create boot parttition, so you need to do a full or a embeded install on da0 to properly format and create UFS partitions that you can mount later.

Try the following command:

Code: Select all

head -c256000 /dev/da0 | hexdump -C | grep "54 19"
You should get at least one line of output that contains 19 01 54 19, or maybe 54 19 01 00.

It will probably appear on line a350 or 18350. Whereever it is, post the first two occurrances. This will show whether you have a UFS file system in the right location compared to your partition table.

change 256000 to 25600000000 and see if anything turns up. If not, maybe you had this drive split into separate partitions, or weren't using UFS?

The command will take a lot longer to run, 5 to 15 minutes most likely.

Waited on the prompt, but no movement after 2 hours. Would it ever take longer than that to complete?
Going to try reverting to a 9.1.0.1 embedded to HDD as raulfg3 suggested, but having problems burning the img file to DVD, posted here:

Re: Can't get UFS ID error

Post by substr »

Most likely is that the hexdump command is not present on nas4free. (rather, it is a freebsd tool)

I'm going to try UFS explorer on a lost partition and see what happens.

When you used UFS Explorer, I assume you had used the 'Find Partition' button? The strange thing is that your listed partition in UFS Explorer is 650MB (1282594 sectors) into the hard disk. That is probably not good. Did your drive somehow get the first chunk of it overwritten by something else?

When I overwrote my partition table, UFS explorer had no problem seeing all files. When I overwrote the first 64MB of my drive and then ran the Recover, I had something similar to your result, almost the same 650MB skipped by UFS explorer, even though I only overwrote 64MB.

You might try the UFS explorer with the intelliraw box checked, or get the program testwin/photorec and use it to run a recover on the drive. At that point, you're not recovering the file system. You are hoping to pick pieces of files back together. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

One other option: When I manually specified a partition, UFS explorer was able to find many more files, with actual names. So, you might try manually creating a UFS partition(Define Partition button) the entire sector count of your drive, less the value of the start sector, and with a starting sector of 160 or 63, 34, or 2048 or any other number you can figure might have been the start of your drives only partition. I suggest trying a few of these different starting points and see if you get better results. Since it looks like you did have an overwrite, there is likely still going to be loss.
