New Socket 1155 Board

Post by Fire »

Hello,

at the moment i'm running my NAS with a Intel DH67CF (B3) Board and a Celeron CPU.
Unfortunately it doesn't support Wake On Lan (WOL) from S3 :( so i need a new one with the following features:

- MiniITX Size
- Socket 1155 for my Intel Celeron 1610
- PCIe x8/x16 for my IBM M1015
- 2x DDR3 RAM with 16GB Support (i have 2x8 GB DDR3 1600)
- 3 SATA Ports (or more)
- fast Ethernet Chipset with WOL Support
(my current board has an Intel ntework card, running 110mb/s easily)

- Support for WOL from any S-State (S3, S4, S5)
- Fast boot time (like boot optimization on my Intel board)
- full HW support by Nas4Free Version 9.2 and up

- cheap if possible, i'm not running my NAS 24/7
- should be available in Germany
- don't need sound, or any other cool features

thanks for your advice :)

if you are looking into another board why not a 1150 one?

But have you tried an addon network card, if that fixes your wol problems?

i want to reuse my complete HW, and it's a socket 1155 CPU.
i cannot add an additional network card, i only have one PCIe x16 slot and added an IBM M1015 already :)

one board u told is for 1150 -> incompatible and the other one is with cpu and way to expensive :(

A Celeron G1820 1150 is 38 Euro.
That shouldnt be the deciding factor.

Plus those boards support ECC Memory which is better for zfs.

Are you sure it doesn't support WOL? The board has a 82579V lan chip and it should be supported by the em driver in N4F/freebsd 9.2.

Did you try to find out why you can't WOL to work?

Did you enable "wake computer via PCIE" or similiar option in bios?

Did you make sure you have S3 enabled in bios?

Here is a tip from a pro:
http://n4f.siftusystems.com/index.php/2 ... l-support/

Since 1155 socket is end of life, your best bet to find another board would be on ebay. If you are going to buy a new board, you might as well build a 1150 system and sell the old stuff on ebay to make up for the difference.

Freebsd has a hardware compatibility list. Hint: google is your friend.

You *might* still be able to find this board: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H77I/

I've used it myself and everything works with N4F and WOL works.

Why don't you try to do some research and spec out a system and post it here for advice instead? You might get more useful feedback that way.

EDIT: the board bossman mentioned, E3C226D2I, is a great board. I'm using it right now for N4F so I don't know where you got the idea it is not compatible. The only thing that is not working is WOL with the freebsd drivers (official Intel). But that is not a deal breaker for me because i'm using IPMI to wake the system.

yeah thats why i recommended that board. The IPMI is a lot less hassle than WOL under freebsd, and it can do so much more.

it does suppot WOL, but only from S5, not from S3 ... so i got it to work, but not from standby.
there is no option like "wake computer via PCIE" in bios, no word about "S3" too, only something about S5
i know this tip u mentioned, but its for enabling WOL at all .. and like i said, it does support WOL already (3 different options listed by ifconfig -m)

the Asus P8H77I costs about 150 Euro here, it's too expensive
the ASRock E3C226D2I is about 230 Euro ... AND it's still for socket 1150, as mentioned before, i want to keep my CPU, and my CPU is a socket 1155 CPU :)

regarding IPMI: where does it have to be supported? BIOS? Hardware? how can i find out if my board supports this?

IPMI is like an small extra computer inside you computer. You will only find IPMI on server boards and not consumer.

It allows you to controll a computer over the network without having to attach a monitor or keyboard. Its like a Remote Desktop.
If the PC crashes you can reboot it over Ipmi.

That is because it is not made anymore, thus the price gouging. But since the board has 6 sata ports and depending how many HDs you want to connect, you might not need the m1015 anymore. The m1015 is a nice item so i'm sure you'll get a nice price if you sell it. But seriously the path you are going down to get a 1155 itx motherboard is a dead end. Go sell the M1015, cpu, mobo and get a i3, asus H87I-PLUS. You'll probably end up with with more cash on your hand or at the very worst break even. Do the math.

Edit: If you are so hell bent to get a 1155 itx motherboard, ebay is your friend.

socket 1155 is not dead, not now, Intel even brings new CPUs from time to time :) there are many miniITX boards available, i just wanted to know if someone knows a model with full support for my features ... which are mainly WOL from S3 :D

What about ASRock E3C224D2I? Supported fully with latest BSD/N4F? I'm looking for a new build, 24x7 setup...
As an optimum for NAS, CPU I would go for:
LGA1150 Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core G3220

16 GB ECC Crucial.

Think Haswell based CPUs and the related board chipsets are not yet supported....

Really? I've seen lots of folks run on X10 series Supermicro boards... The only issue is Kingston 8GB modules..
