9.2 breaks Minidlna

Post by RAJOD »

9.2 does not seem to be ready for prime time. All of the other past updates went without a hitch.

This one requires extra work. The hard drives and ZFS pool has errors and my DLNA server went offline and would not show up on my smart TV.

The fix was to simply revert back to version 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 847). That went without problems. As soon as I did that everything worked again.

I did not really see a reason to get 9.2. Other than creating extra work what does it offer?
NAS1 9.1.0.1-Sandstorm(847)- Intel G1610 @2.6Ghz / MB - Gigabyte B75M-3DH Ram - 8 gigs / HD - WD RED 2TB x 2 in Raid 1 ZFS
NAS2 9.3.0.2-Nayla(1771)- Quad Xeon(R) CPU 5150@2.66GHz x 2 / MB-Dell 490 8Gb ECC HD - Toshiba 5TB x 2 in Raid 1 ZFS
NAS3 10.2.0.2-Prester(1855) - LENOVO ThinkServer TS140 i3-4130 CPU@3.40GHz, Ram - 4GbECC / HD - WD RED 2TBx2 in Raid1 ZFS

What issue do you encounter with hard drives and ZFS pool errors ? Please advise so that we can troubleshoot and resolve it.

There are features added and fixes and port upgrades. For detailed information please see README/CHANGELOG :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... 2.0.1.943/

Some fundamental programs used for hard disks detection that are deprecated in 9, and rework to use its replacement is required. (an example : atacontrol http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?quer ... ormat=html ) It is true that if you send your hard disks to standby/sleep, it may not work in certain scenario. That piece of work will require further development.

A couple more hard disks controllers support are supported as well. However, as I do not have all these physical hardware to perform any more rigorous testing, I rely on user feedback to refine and debug as issue arises.

Even if you do not benefit from additional features, security exploits that are fixed in various packages will still be helpful to you to reduce attack vector.

However, if you do not feel comfortable with all these changes, you can keep using older version that suits you until you think it's ready. No one can force you to upgrade ;-)

As for minidlna, it is not officially supported by NAS4Free. Please contact its extension developer.

Everyone appreciates the work involved in development.

I feel it is the responsibility of the users to alert others users of issues. All this talk of twisting arms in your reply was not needed.

Even though something is not supported it needs to be posted that a particular version can cause issues with other applications.

Maybe there are 100 minidlna users out there that might want to think twice about upgrading. They need information to weigh the pros and cons of a patch.

Lets see if I upgrade it will fix this but break three other things. Should I upgrade? People need to see this, sorry if it hurts.
