RTL8168 + MTU > 1500 = webconfig not reachable?

Post by Andy22 »

Hi,

i have a strange error, if i set the MTU to anything other than 1500 i can't reach the nas4free webserver/config page anymore? Samba/sftp/ftp work just fine at max. mtu 6000 and i get a nice network speed increase using higher mtu this way.

So has anyone a remotely idea/explanation whats going on here?

Thx
Andy

Realtek cards are not the best network card.

they dont even support the 9k jumbo frames.

have you made sure that every nic and switch in betwen support this size of the MTU ?
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

I'm aware that realtek cards are crappy and problems may occur on none windows os.
Yes i had a 6k mtu setup running on my LAN, with all machines being Win7 systems. 6k made no problems and using the Microsoft Network Monitor also showed that 6k payloads are used for transfers.
I'm not bothered that i cant use 9k vs 6k MTU, the problem is rather that i cant use the web-interface anymore?

So a "ifconfig re0 mtu 6000 up" -> results in everything working fine, except the webinterface is not reachable anymore.
Using "ifconfig re0 mtu 1500 up" -> instantly fixes this issue and the webinterface is working again?

I should add that this is from a Win7 machine in the same LAN using also 6k MTU.

I wonder what can render the webinterface none usable by just changing the MTU size, while other data services work fine? Maybe its a problem on the client side trying to reach the server?

Thx
Andy

I can reproduce this behavior even if i use a total different machine as server. I also tried useing chrome/ff/ie to access the server after the mtu change.
The second machine unfortunately has a similar realtek card, but i will change the network card in the machine that tries to reach the server and see how this works.

try installing tcpdump and see what arrives at the machine.
