New Install on a Previous Nas4Free

Post by sjbs »

I have recently attempted to upgraded the firmware unsuccessfully and it appears as if the USB is now corrupt.

Anycase, I downloaded the latest Live CD rom 9.2.0.1 - Shigawire (revision 943) and created a new USB, but now I had a problem where one of the drives were also not recognised correctly and went off line.

I also updated the firmware on the one hard drive, and it seems like that caused some problems in that it wasn't properly installed and created some errors. Thanks to @ b0ssman - this was eventually fixed and scrubs are coming out clean. viewtopic.php?f=66&t=6229

But, with all the fixing, I'm worried that I'm creating a long term problem.
1) Is the drive correctly installed and reconnised by the system. (It should be noted that I formatted the drive as part of the process to get it back online and repalced, but can't remember if it was 4k, but I know the others are 4K formatted) As I still have all the information elsewhere, I start completely over if aspects are suboptimal/incorrect, but it will be more difficult to correct later.

2) Is the pool correctly/optimally configured. I have read that becuase I used ada0 to - ada3 naming of the drives, it could become a problem. It was recommended that I export the pool and then import them by ID eg,
# zpool export Backup
# zpool import -d /dev/disk/by-id Backup

Is this even required?

The updated firmware drive, does not appear as a device in the GUI Pool>Virtual Device > selecting the configuration of the pool> Device Section, or any other action like Pool>Tools>Replace or Pool>Tools>Remove or Pool>Tools>Offline or or Pool>Tools>Online

but is reporting correctly in Pool> Information see below:

pool: Backup
state: ONLINE
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 6h5m with 0 errors on Wed Mar 19 22:08:00 2014
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
Backup ONLINE 0 0 0
raidz1-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
ada0 ONLINE 0 0 0
ada1 ONLINE 0 0 0
ada2 ONLINE 0 0 0
ada3 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors

I have captured the history of the pool below:

1) whats your output of zdb | grep ashift. if its 12 its ok

2) the usb embedded install is importing the drive with each boot as you can see from the history "zpool import -d /dev -f -a" so its already done each reboot.

what you shoudl check are the smart values of your drive and look for pending sectors/read errors
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Thanks for the quick response.

$ zdb | grep ashift
ashift: 12

Thus it seems fine.

All the smart values are OK as well.

Any reason why ada0 does not appear in any of the zfs menus, (except information) but appears on the Disk > Format Menu, ie it appears as if I can format this device, (but the others ada1-3 don't appear?)

Would you recommend I export/import on by ID?

Numerous times allready. I have jsut rebooted the machine as well. I'm still a bit worried that it wasn't repalced correctly.

Should it be formatted before the replacement?

Yes, from the information it appears correct.

I have includes a couple screenshots in the attached. (Could not manage to attach the pdf)

Just found the problem:  Seems like the detected configuration and the current configuration was not syncronised.

Syncronising the two fixed it.

Thanks for the assistance. :D

Last question with regards to ZFS - how do I know that the system is running on a 4K format?

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

It really helps to try and understand what is happing and why it is happening.

Allthough I've been using Nas4Free for the last 3 years, it has been so trouble free that I enver had to go into the detail (or forget the details becuase I only setup the server so long ago) :D

I have recently also gone the ZoL route on my main home machine, thus expeting to get inot more details now again.
