PCI SATA cart for Asus p2b

Post by Dodo67 »

Hi,
I would like to build a NAS around an Asus p2b motherboard, which is equipped with a Pentium II (manual p2b : http://www.manualslib.com/manual/249625/Asus-P2b.html ). This card has an Intel 440BX chipset.
Because obviously has only IDE connectors (PATA), I would use a PCI card that gives me 2 or 4 SATA connectors and use a pair of 1TB or 2TB disks. I know it will not be a super-performance NAS , but it only serves as a file-server, nothing more.
Now, the problem is choosing the right PCI card : I think my motherboard only implements PCI version 2.1 , while the various PCI cards that I find around require at least PCI 2.2 or 2.3
That's why I came to doubt that some cards may not work on this motherboard.
these are the cards I selected:
  1. Promise FastTrack S150 TX4
  2. Syba SD -SATA- 4P Serial ATA150 4x Ports RAID Controller Card with Sil3114 chipset
  3. other card with SIL3114 : http://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Serial-Ada ... PA58QXMMTD
  4. Syba SATA II 4 x PCI RAID Host Controller Card SY- PCI40010 ( http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SATA-RAID-Co ... roduct_top)
  5. SYBA SD- SATA2 - 4IR PCI SATA II ( 3.0Gb / s) RAID Controller Card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816124008 )
Question: Can I buy one of these either? Or someone could give me problems? Do you have any other card that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance to all for your answers.

First of all thank you Apollo for your very quick answer. :)

I'm from Italy (Milan). Please look if you have something unused an let me know.

Do you think the Sata2 card can give me any performance improvement over the SATA1? The PCI is only 133 MBytes/s (theorical).
Or perhaps the SATA2 is a better choice for compatibility with current harddisks?
The price is higher than a SATA1 card, what benefit would I get?

Thanks.

The Promise one works out of the box, I can confirm that. ( have been using one for about 3 years, before migrating to the LSI SAS)

The PCI bus was limiting data transfers to about 30MB/s but with your equipment I guess it will not be a problem anyways.

However, I think you should Google a bit about PCI 2.1 compatibility ( I can only confirm that nas4free works with it)
The good thing is that they are very cheap and even if the PCI is not compatible you will not have spend much

Sata I vs sata II : you won't be able to reach any of their speeds with your hardware...(even if PCI was not the limiting factor)

Given the fact you are in Italy, Transport costs are supposingly too high to make sense sending it.
But search at ebay, I got mine also from there...
