I'm currently in the process of testing NAS4Free as a means to move off of OpenFiler. Currently I have an ESXi host connected via ISCSI to OpenFiler and it does work, but without any new updates or support, the time has come to move on. Thus I have been testing NAS4Free and I have run into an issue. I have setup a small ZFS Raidz2 and was able to configure ISCSI so that my ESXi host can see the volume. However, when I increase the ZFS volume, NAS4Free sees the change, but when I rescan via ESXi, the old size remains. For example, I created a small 10 GB ZFS volume which my ESXi host can see via ISCSI. I then increase the ZFS volume size to 20 GB and NAS4Free recognized the new size. However after rescanning via ESXi, the LUN size still shows 10 GB.
The only way I have found to increase the space was to delete the ISCIS extent in NAS4Free and then recreate it. This time with an ESXi rescan, the new size is recognized, but this cannot be the only way for ESXi to see an increase. I do not see this behavior with Openfiler, as the increased space is seen by ESXi on the fly. Deleting and recreating the extend would have a negative effect on VMs which have vmdk's on the LUN/ZFS volume.
Is there another way or something I'm missing that would allow ESXi to see the increase space without having to delete the extent that is associated with the ZFS volume I'm trying to increase.
Thanks

Re: Increase ZFS Volume For ESXi DS On The Fly
b0ssman,
Yes I'm currently running NAS4Free on the ESXi, but only temporary so that I can test and familiarize myself with the software. No real data is being used as this is only for testing. I'm aware of the may reason not to run NAS4Free on the ESXi, and will eventually be using physical equipment after all testing is done. But from reading your suggested link it seems it has to do more with resources and the way ZFS vs ESXi will handle the drives then not allowing some features to run. When running NAS4Free on ESXi, even for testing, limit what NAS4Free can do, in this case increase the storage for ESXi?
I'll try to gather some physical equipment to do my testing on, but I'm confused as to why I may be having this issue.
