Double Problem here:

USB-Harddisks are not really reliably supported by FreeBSD, in addition
neither is the Use of NTFS-disks recommended for writing operations (its more or less only recommended for reading this diskformat). NTFS is not natively supported by FreeBSD.

in sum: not an good idea.

Perhaps describe your environment and which task u want to do, then perhaps we can recommend something...

For what it's worth I believe I have the same problem. I spent some time trying get my rsync to a 3TB USB3 NTFS drive and was going nuts trying to troubleshoot it when discovered that a simple copy paste over the network will also crash nas4free. Then I found this post.
So for those with more knowledge than me, what can you suggest for a portable backup drive that can be read by other systems (windows & ubuntu)? That's why I was using NTFS!

Hello,

Because I didn't want to mess up my datas on the NAS, I formated all external HDD (Mandriva and Mageia OS local mirrors) in EXT3.
I know... only 15% of the computers served by the NAS here are M$... so not really relevant here.
I run all backups with a Unix computer on EXT3 formated HDDs and send most datas on the NAS using NFS or FTP. So in the worst case I can populate the NAS by direct USB link and RSYNC or NFS/FTP over the LAN.

For people who only have M$, the way to go would be direct backups over USB on detachable HDDs formated in EXT3, using the internal rsync command of NAS4Free, and pack the HDDs in the safe after the job's done.
UFS HDDs formated by NAS4Free seem only to be readable from BSD systems, but the EXT3 format can also be read using explore2fs programs on M$ stuff.

Ciao @+

Agreed. EXT3 is a good compromise for USB HDDs if they're going to be used in Windows systems as well. There's several EXT3 drivers for Windows.

I tried to rsync an NTFS drive in N4F, and every time the system IMMEDIATELY crashed and rebooted. The same for cp command. NTFS can only be used as read-only in N4F.
