disk failed
Hi,
In my RAID 5 config there is one disk that has unreadable sectors:
Apr 29 16:03:35 nas4free smartd[1864]: Device: /dev/ada1, 1312 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Apr 29 16:03:35 nas4free smartd[1864]: Device: /dev/ada1, 2 Offline uncorrectable sectors
It is a WD20EARS and I want to replace it, can I use another type of disk? Or does it need to be the same?
Regards,
Kevin

Re: disk failed
it just needs to be the same size or bigger.
the data in those sectors might now be corrupt, as raid5 does not support checksuming.

Re: disk failed
Hi kevinevo7,
could you also post the other smart values? Or at least power on hours and load cycle count?
I am just curious I was using a bunch of these disks in the past too and had many problems with them. My types were either wd15ears and wd20ears...
And just yesterday a problem with a wd15ears appeared in the german sub-forum.
So it is only my forensic interest in this
Thanks,
crowi

Re: disk failed
Thank you so much!
That confirms my assumption that there was a problem with some batches of this kind of disks.
Two of your drives show a high load cycle count (although not critical yet), which is a known head parking problem of the WD greens and can be fixed with the 'wdidle' from WD. Heavy use of head parking wears out the mechanics.
But, as you said, one of them (Device /dev/ada1) is already dying
You should fix your other drive /dev/ada0 with wdidle before it is too late...
Your third and fourth drive is not affected, although all of your drives have similar age and were powered on not too often.
Please think about exchanging the drives in near to mid future, from my personal experience I wouldn't have too much trust in them.
Cheers,
Crowi

Re: disk failed
Hi,
I was aware of de head parking problem, I've fixed it with the Wdidle tool already.
The reason that the first two drive's have a higher load cycle count is that they have worked for a year without the fix. At that time I wasn't aware of the problem.
The other 2 are bought 1 year later and then I applied the fix to all the drives.
Thanks for your info.
Kevin

Re: disk failed
Hi,
ahh, okay makes sense for me now.
Anyway, keep an extra eye on these disks and backup your data, to be safe.
Sidenote: I don't know why WD does this, but on the newer WD REDs they implemented the 'intelligent parking' function now as well, although nobody needs it.
Cheers,
Crowi

Re: disk failed
well its a nice way to sell new hard drives.
they will fail because of excessive head parking, but normally after the warranty has run out.

Re: disk failed
Yes, b0ssman, I think you are right again, this time unfortunately...
just a half year ago I discovered that my work-notebook's WD blue drive has the same crappy feature: I fixed it after already >850.000 parking cycles (600.000 are listed in the drive specs)
Here I won't be worried if this drive dies, will get a bigger one then

Re: disk failed
I don't see any Current Pending Sectors in the SMART log posted.
That kind of failure can happen and is not a clear indication of a failing drive, unless you have tens of them. Only 2? no worry.

Re: disk failed
can you manually mount the drive on the command line using the /dev/raid5/<device> ?
