Always check new disks!

Post by manuel78 »

..don't make my mistake!
I assembled my nas4free box (intel core2duo e2140, 2gb ram, 2x250 ide softraid, 30gb ide system, 1 tb sata, 2tb sata) and started the file transfer.
The setup worked fine (added mldonkey too), only the brand new 2gb WD EARX drive gave me errors formatting to UFS, but ZFS seemed fine.
So i started using the box but soon i became strange mldonkey crashs and input/output errors on the WD.
It ended up with some hundreds of gigs lost
Strange that the write and stream to/from the disk went ok, only copy from (backup) gave errors.
Now i tested the disk with WD test utility and i had the confirm, new disk has bad sectors!

p.s. i know the preliminary check should be routine, but home users may not be so careful

I do not think so, try to use this, takes a couple of minutes, but gives good results

Code: Select all

smartctl -t short /dev/[your hdd]
or

Code: Select all

smartctl -t long /dev/[your hdd]
but this takes more time
