HDD access

Post by johna »

Dear NAS4free
Can you help me? My entire nas4free server crashed for the second time. This time I don't think this build is fixable. I need to start from scratch with a new system. I had two HDDs one internal and one External via a USB with its own power supply that I had all of my data on. Now that I and wanting to start over, I wanted to plug in that external HDD into my windows machine to get all the data off the disk. My limited knowledge leads me to this point. Can the data be recovered. Can I used my windows PC to access it?

There are several tools to access UFS in windows:
http://ufs2tools.sourceforge.net/
or:
http://www.ufsexplorer.com/download.php?lang=curr

Btw, why not create a new Nas4free boot device and restore the config?

And don't use USB drives on the N4F many users report problems with this...
NAS 1: Milchkuh: Asrock C2550D4I, Intel Avoton C2550 Quad-Core, 16GB DDR3 ECC, 5x3TB WD Red RaidZ1 +60 GB SSD for ZIL/L2ARC, APC-Back UPS 350 CS, NAS4Free 11.0.0.4.3460 embedded
NAS 2: Backup: HP N54L, 8 GB ECC RAM, 4x4 TB WD Red, RaidZ1, NAS4Free 11.0.0.4.3460 embedded

Many usb drives are simply a sata drive in a case. Try to open that usb drive case to see if you can move the drive into your NAS.
11.2-RELEASE-p3 | ZFS Mirror - 2 x 8TB WD Red | 28GB ECC Ram
HP ML10v2 x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4150 CPU @ 3.50GHz

Extra memory so I can host a couple VMs
1) Unifi Controller on Ubuntu
2) Librenms on Ubuntu

thanks for your help (crowi) of the two options I tried the first one and had a bit of trouble installing the ufs2tools so that I could use it. when I tried the second option the soft ware found all of the info. the drive was there is all of its glory. however they wanted 39.95 to move it to a safe drive. so now that I know it is there I'm going back and trying a little harder to use the first option. as to your question why not try and restore the config. I have had a wonderful time over the last two years with nas4free and told a lot of people how wonderful it is, however I built it on an old laptop that had an expiry date. and although I fixed it a few times. it had reached the end of the road. The next time I'm going to do it right. however I have a back up of most everything on the drive so it's not a total loss. there is some stuff I would lose if I can't get to this external hdd. I will keep trying its kind of a challenge. thanks for your help again so far.

KenZ71 thanks for your response but the HDD is external and the NAS is on a laptop build.

This community is really great !!!!!

Then run a live Linux on another PC. Mount the ufs drive and copy files over to a NTFS external drive. This saves you the 39$
