weird ada0 behaviour
I've had some problems in the past with simple raid1, so I decided to jump ship and create a mirror zpool. The disks are ada0 and ada1. All went fine creating the pool and copying data to it.
When I reboot or shutdown&boot nas4free the ada0 is not found. I need to remove it from the disk management interface, remove its power cable and reinsert its power cable, the disk spins up, and re-add it in the disk management interface.
Any reboot or shutdown&boot will render the ada0 disk not found.
I tried different power cables and different sata cables.
Can anyone help me isolate what the problem is with ada0 not being recognised/found at boot?

Re: weird ada0 behaviour
can you post the dmesg output when the disk is not recognized.

ahci? I didn't enable ahci, unless it is called something else in my bios? Not sure what it is really.

Thanks b0ssman! Now I can battle with the manufacturer to get a replacement
Whilst I'm at it, any other drives that you would suggest replacing based on the SMART?

Thanks b0ssman! While I can't exclude some vibration, all drives are mounted on the same mounting brackets. I guess the other drives should show there is vibration also?
How would one go about updating the firmware of a HDD through nas4free?

Re: weird ada0 behaviour
I would just like to rule out a possibility.
The SMART info seems to suggest something is wrong with the drive.
I have replaced SATA cables as well as power cables.
BUT, I have not linked the drive to another port on the motherboard. Do you think it is possible that the port on the motherboard would be the culprit? How would I go about trying the disk on another port without messing up the complete nas4free set-up? Thanks!

Re: weird ada0 behaviour
I just put in a brand new drive, and issued the command zpool replace TR ada0, nothing happens. Same when I try with ada0.nop
How can I re-establish my ZFS with the new drive? Thanks!
EDIT: I gave up. Shut down and went for a walk. When I came back I started up nas4free, and wonder, ZFS is rebuilding. I don't understand why it didn't do it earlier and now does it automatically. Anyway, seems the issue is solved, let's hope.

Re: weird ada0 behaviour
This used to actually be an external USB disk. I guess the vibration/G-Sense dates from back in those days?b0ssman wrote:=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===

1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 100 100 051 Pre-fail Always - 1
191 G-Sense_Error_Rate 0x0022 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 730
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x002a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 12
that could be an indication of vibration in your case. and the raw read error could be because you havnt updated the firmware (cant tell with those drives)
