ASRock C2550D4I Intel controller strange behavior

Post by fumantsu »

I have a strange issue with the Intel controller of this MB. Every SATA2 HDD (I have face the problem in 6 different HDDs) I have put, with different cables I have this error message, reducted speed and sometimes disconnection of the disk.
The error message is:

Code: Select all

Jun 11 12:24:08 fileserver kernel: (adaX:ahcich10:0:0:0): CAM status: Uncorrectable parity/CRC error
Jun 11 12:24:08 fileserver kernel: (adaX:ahcich10:0:0:0): Retrying command
Jun 11 12:24:08 fileserver kernel: (adaX:ahcich10:0:0:0): READ_FPDMA_QUEUED. ACB: 60 00 e8 8a 64 40 1c 00 00 01 00 00
Jun 11 12:24:08 fileserver kernel: (adaX:ahcich10:0:0:0): CAM status: Uncorrectable parity/CRC error
I change the ada number with X because it happens with any disk in any port (SATA2 or 3). I have see that this is usually happens when I put high load to the disks.
This is not happening (until now) on 1 SATA3 disk I have put and when I move the same disks to the Marvell controllers. SMART is OK. I have make a long tests in all HDD and also I have remove the disk and put them on a windows machine and check them with HDD Sentinel Pro (as far the SMART). Also as I said this is not happening when I move the disks in Marvell controller.
Also I have test to leave only one HDD on Intel controller and the rest on Marvell. The one in Intel is facing errors.

In nutshell:
SATA2 disks on Intel controller with different cables have issues when are in high load.
Could be problem of the FreeBSD driver? (old version perhaps?)

crc errors usually mean bad cables.

are you sure that the cables you are using are sata III cables?
sata III and sata II cables look the same, but sata III cables have a tighter tolerance.

I have use the SATA3 cables that were inside the box plus 2 SATA 2 cables from my old NAS which I pretty sure that are ok. But why this doesn't happen on Marvell?

it is possible that the motherboard is broken.

but first try the same under linux and see if you also get a crc error.

I was thinking the same but..... I just put a SATA3 HDD on this controller and currently is also in high load (writing). I haven't see any error....
