windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Hello everyone,
I have everything setup and works great except that sometimes, my windows 8 pro just drops the server. I have signed in so my credentials are already saved in windows. And here's the funny part, if i just log out of my windows account or restart my computer basically, it works fine again. It never drops the connection on my macbook pro by the way. Or any other devices. Just this one windows 8 pro desktop. Also, the desktop is connected to my nas through ethernet and my macbook pro is connected via wireless which i thought was weird cause i thought the wireless would maybe drop the connection even if it does so but never expected the wired connection to drop out. There are so many people with the same issue but i haven't gotten the actual answer. Thank you for your help.

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Well drops meaning it just disconnects from the server. When I try to open the folder it says connection cannot be re-established or something along that lineb0ssman wrote:what do you mean exactly by drops the server?

Here is the attachment. Look at the bottom. Sorry I am not sure if this is the correct log file. I grabbed it from the dropdown menu that said 'system' under Diagnostics->Logs.b0ssman wrote:what does the samba log say?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
first of turn of master browser. there is no need for that if you have windows machines on your network.
the set the log level for CIFS/SMB to maximum and try again.

Code: Select all
Local Master Browser: Allows NAS4Free to try and become a local Master Browser. On most networks where you have a Windows Workgroup there should be 1 and only 1 Master Browser and it should be your server. An improper setting will result in erratic discovery of shared resources, i.e., your stuff will magically appear and disappear from the network from time to time making your head spin. If you have a large or complicated network, you built it, you ought to know how to properly set this. 12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

I read both links and the documentation one says the following: "On most networks where you have a Windows Workgroup there should be 1 and only 1 Master Browser and it should be your server." So why is it that you want me to turn off master browser on my NAS?

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Because you have other Windows PC in your LAN that are configured like "Local Master Browser" and makes your lan crazy.chachi420 wrote:" So why is it that you want me to turn off master browser on my NAS?
you can do 2 things:
1- Disable "Local master Browser" in your NAS and do not touch other PC in your LAN.
2- Enable "Local Master Browser" in your NAS, but disable "local Master Browser" in all others PC in your LAN.

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Ok perfect. That's exactly what I was expecting you to say. Now my question is, which option is better? 1 or 2? It makes sense to go for option 1 because that way, i only have to disable local master browser in a single system whereas in option 2, i have to disable it in multiple other PCs that are running windows. Correct? Also, if i were to disable local master browser in PC, how can I do that? Could I follow the steps on this site?raulfg3 wrote:Because you have other Windows PC in your LAN that are configured like "Local Master Browser" and makes your lan crazy.chachi420 wrote:" So why is it that you want me to turn off master browser on my NAS?

To test if you do a good job, revise your logs before and after the changes, Errors must dissapear from logs if you really disable all Local master Browser except one in your NAS.

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Okey so far it's good. Since i only have one windows computer, i just left the local master browser turned on, on that pc and turned it off on my NAS. If i get any problems again, i will turn it off on my PC and turn it on my NAS.

Re: windows 8 keeps dropping the server
Just to let other people know, i never had to do anything amymore. My windows 8 computer always connects to my server without a problem anymore. Just to clarify again, I disabled the local master browser on my NAS and left it on for my PC.
