Can't find device to install on
Hey, im trying to install nas4free og my old desktop pc from a USB stick. When i've chosen to install embedded on hdd, i get a choice of where to install from, a list where only the USB stick appears of course. Then i get the list of destinations where i want to install to. Here i get a list of 6 elements, da0 to da5. All of these have 0MB avalible space (I'm assuming thats what 0mb means). So what are these units? I have only to things connected to the pc, a keyboard and the USB stick. And why isn't my disk here? I'm very n00b to this, but I think i'm supposed to install the nas4free software to the 750GB disk i have in the pc right? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Can't find device to install on
no you are supposed to install it to a second usb 2 with the embedded install.
give use some more info about your hardware.

Re: Can't find device to install on
Not sure exactly what you want to know but:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.6GHZ
Memory: 8GB
Storage: 750GB Sata.
I have just completley wiped the disk, so theres nothing on it. I mustt have misunderstood the guides completley then if i'm not supposed to install to the pc itself, but rather a second usb

Re: Can't find device to install on
to save valuable SATA connectors to use on SATa Disk ( Data Disk) is recommended to install embeded N4F on a USB Stick.Lymanax wrote:I mustt have misunderstood the guides completley then if i'm not supposed to install to the pc itself, but rather a second usb
If you boot from a liveCD yo need to select the only USBkey detected, if you booted from LiveUSB, you must be sure to select apropiate USB key as destination.
Once installed, you can detach LiveUSB and boot from USB embeded Nas4Free.

Re: Can't find device to install on
Okey, so i install the OS from one USB to another, and then i boot up the pc from the second USB at all times? I will try this tomorrow then, when i can get my hands on a second USB
Thanks for all the help so far, I will probably be back if I have more questions

well you didn't post the information i was interested in.
the motherboard.
it could be that the motherboard has an additional sata controller that is not supported by freebsd and you have connected the disk to this.

Re: Can't find device to install on
Motherboard is: Packard Bell RS740
I have succesfuly installed it now, but it seems it can't find my 750GB disk. I try to do "import disks" and it doesn't show it. As I've said, its just been completley wiped. What should I do?

can you post the dmesg output or Diagnostics|Log from the webgui?

Re: Can't find device to install on
You mean everything from the system option in the dropdown menu under diagnostics|log? I have tried the pluss sign and the import disks button.

that might be your problem.Lymanax wrote:Motherboard is: Packard Bell RS740
freebsd and those old amd chipsets dont work well together.
try adding
hw.pci.enable_msix="0"
hw.pci.enable_msi="0"
hint.ahci.0.msi="0"
to the loader.conf

Re: Can't find device to install on
Well i tried entering it under the loader.conf, but i got this error message: Warning: fopen(/cf/boot/loader.conf.local.35438): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /etc/inc/util.inc on line 2543 Error: Failed to write configuration file '/cf/boot/loader.conf.local'
Then the server crashed and now it wont turn back on
Is it impossible to make it work on this motherboard?
