I am building a new nas4free with rack chassis, and i had som spare hdd to put in(not in the bays)
All the 16 bays is in use, but then when i was powering up the system it came some smoke at the SAS backplane.
I discovered that the one 3TB hdd is burned or the printplate is burned.
I have not tuched those at all.
I can not see the reason for why but it has happend, is there any chance to get the data back?
I guess not but ask anyway

Re: Strange accident
Don't know about your cause... Maybe overload?
But if there is any chance of recovery on the zapped drive, it is probably by swapping the circuit board with an identical model. The data recovery companies are usually pretty good at doing that. Not sure if it is a DIY project; if you screw up, you've probably got two dead drives. The circuit board does have to be identical.

Re: Strange accident
It can be b0sman, but it also could be of overload.
That said it is a 400W powersupply and the CPU is 45W plus controllers and 18 hdd`s .
if i calculate it right it would not get any problems, but i could be wrong.
I have anyway learned something

Re: Strange accident
It was my power supply wich cause it, i set a new one now wich is 600 or 650W but i see in 3,5V or 5V it only give 112W.
This means 16Xhdd`s is maybe max also for a PSU at this size depending on the powerconsume it get at max.
One 1TB and one 2TB is also not detected anymore by the LSI controllers
