Motherboard died. New Motherboard supports 64 bit os

Post by ExTruckie »

Hello all

My NAS4Free 32 bit server motherboard died a few days ago. I have a replacement on the way and it will support 64bit NAS4Free. I was running embedded off a 2Gb usb drive. I should be able to plug this into the new mobo and it should boot, Correct? Being that this install is 32 bit, what do I have to do to run in 64 bit? Is it as simple as loading the 64 bit embedded instead of the 32 bit? If so can I use my existing config file or will I have to reinstall everything again.

Thanks
Mark Minnich

Installing a 64 bit N4F and restoring the config file of the old system should work, if
N4F supports the new Hardware completely. So check Hardware compatibility list of FreeBSD 9.2 (if you use N4F Version 972)

Agreeing to Apollo, the only issue that might occur is, that your disk numbers/names get muddled up on the new mainboard, so you possibly have to import the disks again at Disks|Management

New motherboard should be here tomorrow and I should have the box back together later that night. I may also have a power supply issue but I don't have my meter at home to check it. I will have to remember to bring it home with me from work. I will keep everyone advised.

I got the motherboard installed. The power supply is ok. I can only seem to install as a full install on a HD. I also had to use a usb dvd player to install the cd. My internal cd drive wont read disks but needs to be there so the install can occur. I am unable to load anything onto the usb stick either, had to get an new one 8G smallest store had. If I remove it n4f shows that it was removed on the monitor, and when plugging back in I see the info for the reconnection.

Update:

I FINALLY got a new optical drive installed in the machine and got the embedded loaded on the USB drive. everything is normal. The old USB drive is ok and is where the embedded file is located. I have noticed that when I try to look at a firmware update the process take about a minute, is this normal?
I don't recall it taking that long.
