Minimum Size of CD-card?

I would like to install Nas4Free on a CF-card mounted with an Adapter at a IDE-port. CF-card is recognized in BIOS and if i use a Linux-LiveCD (gparted) it is also recognized and useable. But if i would like to install NAS4free as embedded on the CF i can't select it, only the HDDs are listed. The size of CF is 512MB, Is this to small for the installation?

At the moment it is running from an 2GB USB-Stick. Everything is fine and works well. But the USB-Stick in a USB-connector is annoying me..

512 is NOT too small
the OS is a bit over 200 Mb, say 220
the config is 20 Kb

of my three, the bottom one uses the 512 Mb [click to see] the top two use the smallest SATA at 1 Gb.

I actually use one 1GB and one 4GB CF cards. It's enough to let the system grow a little bit...

I have not yet installed NAS4FREE, but am trying. I purchased a 512Mg IDE ata flash card from logicsupply.com for an embedded installation of the NAS4FREE version 9.3.0.2.1349, but the install screen says I need 800meg, is this correct? What happened to 512 Meg being big enough? And I have searched around and haven't found what is the recommended minumum size for embedded install?

I have 3 500meg WD blues (2 new, 1 old but smart drive check says okay) for the DATA drives.

Was the previous version of NAS4Free smaller and should I use that with the 512meg flash or should I use an old 2.6gb Seagate HD that I have laying around and stay with the current version?

old small Hdd work just great for storing the embedded OS and can be installed, set to spin down. [no need to mount]
they will spin up for a config change and spin down 5 minutes later.
here is one I did for my son

apparently not all flash cards are equally easy
all 3 listed below use direct plug in flash from logic supply
the bottom one is 512 Mb
all worked without problems but it has been a while and it is an older ver.

You can install 9.3.0.2 to 512MB media by install menu #4 without swap.
However, upgrading from WebGUI is not yet supported.

Update now! With the newer versions 9.3 and 10.x coming out, 1GB is definitely too small!!!
I'm afraid NAS4Free is going the wrong way like FreeNas did, becoming a full bloated NAS system needing an overkill of hardware to run!

Where are the good 'ol times of FN 0.69? Since then I'm still running NAS4Free (actually version 10.2) on my PII 400 with good performance as UPnP, DAAP, NFS, FTP, RSYNC server, and I hope being able to use this pretty good OS in a frugal way for a long time...
