Anyone have any experience with a Dell Precision 690

Post by Dlukky »

I picked up a Precision 690 on ebay for less than 100 bucks after shipping and a couple of 1 tb wd red drives on newegg. I have loaded freeNAS on it and I think I am going to switch to NAS4free. I have not had any issues with freeNAS I am just tried of being looked down on because I dont want to spend a Grand on a home server.
I am trying to decide between ufs and ZFS. The precision 690 only currently has 4 gig of memroy but that would be easy and cheap to upgrade to 8 to run ZFS. I am not doing anything crazy with the machine just somewhere to backup/store files and stream a movie every now and then. I currently have 2 one tb drives and a 1.5 tb drive to use.

Thanks Dustin

At least 2 drives and ZFS and even with 4GB t will be fine! I personally have got 3 way ZFS mirror and a separate drive for the Transmission download, I spin the 6 drives down to reduce the power consumption if I do not need to use them.
Watercooling is just the beginning ;)
