Drives somehow renamed... Raid Drive wont mount

Post by Marc_Lamp »

All,
I installed FreeNAS on a thumbdrive sometime back in 2010, I have it setup in an old PC with 3 1TB hard drives as a Raid 5. It has been working flawlessly until now.
I went to access the drive last night and I noticed it was statused as DEGRADED, and it showed 3 drives- 1(ad8) was working, and 2 drives(ad10 and ad12) as missing. I completely freaked out thinking that I had lost 2 of my hard drives. I know now that I should not trust just one type of backup, and I do have about 6 other external drives setting around with most of the data on them, but I don't want to lose ANY!
I do have another 500GB hard drive (ad0) that has a windows OS. It is not part of the Raid and it works fine.

Anyways... As I was trying to figure out what to do, (and keep my wife calm), I decided to reboot the FreeNas just to see. As the server was rebooting, I noticed that it showed my 3 hard drives, but it showed them with different drive numbers. They were displayed as ad4, ad6, and ad8.

I was able to run the SMART tests and it shows all 3 drives (ad4,ad6, ad8) as PASSED. I am starting to feel a little better now. (not sure if I should, yet, but I do)

Back when I set this up in 2010, I didn"t save a configuration, so I down loaded the current config.xml, and it shows that my Raid is built to use ad8,ad10 and ad12, which is crazy, cause in the beginning it was built using ad4,ad6, and ad8.

So my questions are this:
Is it possible to change the drive numbers in the config.xml to reflect ad4,ad6,ad8, and the load that configuration?
Is it possible that if the drives are assigned the incorrect numbers that it will cause all my data to be lost?
I was going to try to compare UUIDs and S/N to see if I could map the drives correctly.

I haven't done anything else, in the hopes of not making matters worse. I am not very Unix savvy, so please bare with me.

I thank you in advance for any help!
Marc

I have uploaded some files, that I hope are helpful, but please let me know if there is anything else I can provide.
It would not let me upload .txt files so here is some more info.

This part of the config that shows my Raid is comprised of ad8,ad10,and ad12

RESOLVED---Re: Drives somehow renamed... Raid Drive wont mou

Post by Marc_Lamp »

I tried FSCK but it would not fix it. In the end, I changed the drive #'s from ad8,ad10,ad12 to ad4,ad6,ad8 in the config file in "dreamweaver", I then loaded that config in FreeNAS and rebooted. This time it showed all my drives, but it still would not mount the disk. Finally I went into Disks|Mount Point|Tools and forced a "mount". It mounted fine. I verified all my data is there. I am very happy.
I was going to delete this post, since no one else had responded to it, but I decided to leave it just in case someone else happened to ever have this same issue.
The administrators can do as they wish with it.
I am still bewildered as to why the device Numbers ever got changed in the configs, but I guess I will never know. I now have a copy of the configs and very detailed notes of everything I did to fix it, just in case it happens again!

if one drive fails/is removed the drives numbers shift as they must be in sequence.

to your drive
ada0, 49 degree way to hot.
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 101 096 000 Old_age Always - 49

ada4 41 degrees is also very hot.
190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 059 051 045 Old_age Always - 41

ada8 this drive is failing and should not be used anymore.
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 13
187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 076 076 000 Old_age Always - 24
197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 4
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 4
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.
