MegaRAID SAS 9341-8i

Post by Spira »

Brought today a new controller, after my old one died.

Actually I'am trying to get it working with nas4free. Feebsd support it, but nas4free too?

https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?que ... &sektion=4
I've already tryed to load the driver with adding mrsas_load="YES" to loader.conf without any success.

During boot before the freebsd bootstrap loader all my disks are shown including the JBOD disks from LSI.

from the systemlog:

Code: Select all

kernel: pci1: <mass storage, RAID> at device 0.0 (no driver attached)
Do you have any experience with the new controllers?

Edit:
It seems freebsd added them in the 9.3 release first. Is there any way to get it work?

also there isnt much information on it jet but you could try flashing it with an it mode firmware to make it a LSI SAS 9300-8i.

If that doesnt work ... Unless you are upto spending a lot of time R&Díng this OR you are trying to test out the card and help others .. I'd suggest giving the card back & getting an IBM M1015 \ 9220-8i card and flashing it to IT Mode.

Not being negative - but I spent some time on another card no reaching anywhere. did a lot of reading & troubled a lot of users on forum .. only to come back to M1015 - kept my life simple.

Not the worst idea, especially as this card is cheaper. You won't have a disadvantage as long as you don't want to use High-end SSDs.

Thany you for the hints. I will consider it.

So far the log from 10.1 for now. Acutally I'am searching to get more information about that error.

Code: Select all

Nov 1 20:48:36 nas4free kernel: device_attach: mfi0 attach returned 3
Nov 1 20:48:36 nas4free kernel: mfi0: TB Init has failed with error 3

Nov 1 20:48:36 nas4free kernel: mfi0: Megaraid SAS driver Ver 4.23

Nov 1 20:48:36 nas4free kernel: LSI MegaRAID SAS FreeBSD mrsas driver version: 06.704.01.01-fbsd
Edit:
There is a new driver avalible from LSI: 6.705.10.00
http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/RAI ... Driver.tgz
I copied it into /boot/kernel/ but with no effect. -> kldload doesnt work out (driver already loaded)

Can I ask the developers to add it to the alpha for testing or can I manually switch the driver which sould be loaded during boot?
Nothing for the error right now :(

try flashing it to it mode. which is the mode you want to run that controller in.

the method should be similar to the m1015, just using the firmware files for the SAS 9341-8i and LSI SAS 9300-8i.

Short update:
- flashed newest firmware for the SAS 9431-8i successful
- still the same error: init failed
- installed ms win 7 for testing: "device could not be started" (error 10)

I'am using it for JBOD only for ZFS.
If I would flash the controller to SAS 9300-8i can I flash it back again?

I've talked with LSI. My mainboard is not compatible with the RAID-card. Only a few older were tested by LSI. Result: Gigabyte and LSI won't work together.

I couldn't get the other firmware flashed.
Right now I'am loking for another card. What do you think about that: Adaptec ASA-6805H

due to "ERROR: Failed to initialize PAL. Exiting program" in DOS-mode I had to flash with UEFI
The controller is now flashed in IT-mode
Taking a look into the SAS2 BIOS: LSI SAS9211-8i :)

going back to 9.2 stable...but still no additional harddrives

Code: Select all

Systemlog:
Nov 7 19:49:06 nas4free kernel: pci0: <simple comms> at device 22.0 (no driver attached)
Nov 7 19:49:06 nas4free kernel: pci0: <serial bus, SMBus> at device 31.3 (no driver attached)
It seems that FREEBSD 9.2 is really too old for the new haswell generations
-> 10.1 has no driver issures +1 - So I have to use it :(

ssh broke first when I tried to uprade from 9.2 with default config.
I had to install 10.1 new to get all things work. GUI isn't as good as in 9 but I can use the shell.
-> all HDDs found, all HDDs/SSDs encrypted via webgui successful, ZFS created manually over ssh
-> extreme stable samba write rates from win 7 client
-> samba default: ~70MB/s -> changed buffer from 64240 to 128480 and got >90MB/s :D

Thank You for all your help!

gone back to 9.3 due to extreme slow read speeds with ZFS. Next week I will get my second M1015 card. This one has during SCSI READ() now crc erros on all discs. Still no working system :(

Firmware issure... LSI SAS9211-8i / IBM M1015
FreeBSD 9.3 uses default: Driver P16
I used the latest firmware (P20) from LSI and loaded the driver (P20) during boot. I got a lot of CRC errors during ZFS READ on all disks. Today I downgraded to the firmware P16 and used the default driver version.
It works! No erros anymore! I hope that I must not touch the hardware again.
