How to keep your network interface powered for WOL?

Post by erik »

I tried to get WOL working only to discover that the network leds on the LAN interface switched off during S3 so presumably no power on the interface during S3 and WOL indeed did not work
Then I added another network card as OPT, did not use the card but during S3 the interface leds kept blinking and I was able to use WOL with the MAC address of the OPT interface
Then I disabled the original network interface in the bios so I could use only the added interface for LAN however now the leds no longer blink during S3 and WOL stopped working.
I alway's enabled WOL in the web panel for all interfaces.

Is there something in nas4free that controls the power on the LAN network interface in S3?
primary NAS: 2*8Tb raidz1, backup NAS: 6*2TB raidz2, remote backup NAS: 3*2TB raidz1 : All NAS4Free 11.0

Check the BIOS for enabling the WOL option.

I ran into this problem after finally getting WoL to work right after disabling ACPi 2.0 in my bios. I can only get s5 or s3 power back to my nic again after pulling the wall power plug. You know though, I've had this problem in Windows before, and if I remember correctly, disabling fast boot in the bios might of fixed it (but for me that doesn't work either in NAS4Free). If you have a 3pin header on both mobo and nic, I would defiantely try that first and foremost (sadly, I no longer have such hardware).

Sorry I can't be more help, but just know you're not alone. If you read my topic in here, you'll see we are sharing the same problems with different half-working results. I suspect it's all related to how BSD's WoL plays with ACPi.

Truthfully, I'm currently trying to figure something out with my AVR Dragon, and soon as I do, I'm just going to use a one off controller to short the pins of the on switch to the case (a 5 dollar solution is better than a 500 dollar hardware swap). I have no link, but a few years ago someone wrote an article on how to do this with a Raspberry Pi for turning on a TV (just a work around in case you're interested).

That being said, to just see, I'm going to use Debian when I get home and see if WoL issues are still apparent. BSD just doesn't know WoL, and probably never will.
