NAS4Free upgrade, pools etc.

Post by jonathan2493 »

hi guys,

i have an old install version of NAS4free probably the version from 2012-2013ish. I want to upgrade to the latest version.

My setup is that i have a full USB install, i want to use a brand new USB with the new NAS version on it. I have tried doing dd of the contents of a newer version of NAS4free to another USB. My question is that will it be fine if I just swap out the old usb from the old NAS and place the new USB with the latest version of NAS4free? Will raid still work and detect my drives as it was? If not what steps can I perform to accomplish upgrading my NAS version

I have 12 disks that are formatted as zfs and are in a raid array which was configured in the GUI.

thanks in advance!! :)

not problem, boot from liveCD or live USB and do a fresh install on new USB, please remember that for USB , embeded install is the recomemded install.

Once done, shutdown, plug out, livecd/liveUSB, and old boot disk ( when you have full install), enter in BIOS and configure to boot from new USB.

Boot.

You must have a fully funtional N4F, now you need to recover your data.

1 - go to disk and use button "Clear config & Import Disk"
2 - Go to ZFS Sync and use button to import ZFS pool.

now you must have your valuable data back, now you only need to configure services by hand ( SMB/SSH,FTP, etc...).

No, this are not the steps.

You can plug out your actual boot device and use it as backup boot device. IE: in case that your new embede install do not work or not work as you espected, you allways can use your actual boot device.

But: you need to create a new embeded install on a new USB and boot from it. next updates are really easy because you can update embeded by WebGUI.

not tested, but YES, must work.

But you must need to use button "Clear config & Import Disk" and sync the pool to be sure that your disk are well detected (If you use other boot device in your NAS your disk order may change, so you need to sync real to saved on config.xml to normalize your install).
