NAS4Free looping install - w/ screens, help please.

Hi. I'm new to NAS4Free and I've read as much as I could. I'm not really a network person and kind of just get by with what I know and what the interweb teaches me.

I have an Asus pc
specs:
win7 installed on hd
AMD A8-5500 with Radeion Graphics 3.2 GHz
6GB ram

ACPI x64-based pc

My issue is this, screens attached.

I have NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.3.0.2.1213.iso burned to a cd.

It seems at the start as disks are detected.

Then it goes into the normal menu boot menu where i have to select 9 as my option to install

I then get to the main install menu and this is where I get stuck (or the system does) not sure.
I have 1 hard drive and 1 dvd rom drive.

I start at this menu and no matter what option I select (1, 2 or 3) the same thing occurs.

So for this example I used option 3.

After selecting option 3 I notice something happening, when i pause I see the following

diskinfo: /deve/da0: ioctI(DIOCGMEDIASIZE) failed, probably not a disk file or directory.
(this flashes very fast and just happened to notice so I paused to see)

It then goes into the next section which asks select source (which is the livecd inserted to get this process running)

After selecting source it jumps back to the first option menu

I'm not sure what I'm missing, I've gone through the forums and thought I found one that was similar but it didn't answer my issue.

I have even tried NAS4Free-x64-LiveCD-9.3.0.2.1190.iso but that didn't work either.

I did have a usb in as well and that didn't work so i tried the full install to a hard drive.

Boot to the main screen.
Insert USB stick.
Press 9.

You have to insert the USB after nas4free is fully booted. Once you have it running on the USB stick we can see what is wrong with your drive.

I rebooted to main screen
inserted a USB Stick, it was detected.
I selected 9
then Option 1
and the same thing occurs ( I still loop back to the main option screen as stated above, with or without a USB Stick )

this flashes, quickly

Install 'embedded' os on cf/usb flash drive or hard drive

then i get to installation media page
as mentioned above

after clicking ok
it goes back to nas4free install & upgrade options menu

stuck in a loop, won't let me select destination as mentioned in install guide here:

** Question: does the original HD have to be empty / wiped clean ? it currently holds win7, could that be the issue?

No it does not. (I hope you don't need win7 anymore, because your hdd will be formatted - I suppose you know that)

Anyways, the problem is probably either with the live cd version, or with your cd/cd drive. But since the embedded version is the way to go, forget about the cd...

Please post more info.

You can configure IP address from #2 console menu.
Then, access status.php on your IP address.

there may be other issues; especially with a drive that was upgraded from vista
I have seen such drives that were locked down except from vista's utilities
perhaps newer disk utility CDs can do the job.

After getting the usb option to load the nas4free i started it up, gave it an IP and accessed it from another pc.
will start to do more reading.

is this the safest / best option to have for a small office.

i will play around with it more and see what i can come up with. my office is pretty much as simple as you can get. if i have to teach people to start going through the browser to access the nas4free i may run into complications .. yes that simple.

right now we use a mac mini and access it from desktops / macs alike and get into a file tree and use drag and drop.
hoping i can get nas4free to work in similar fashion.

the pc was actually wiped from win 8 to debian then wiped from debian to win 7.
another programmer had it as debian and he is no longer with us and since i don't know debian i put win 7 on it to at least function.

as mentioned in my other post the embedded option seems to work, and i don't get option 9 when the menu comes up as i'm assuming the server is running from the usb.

i'd like to have a physical disk rather than a usb to host the server.

as mentioned in the OP i'm not really great at IT but I try to get by.

The embedded version is the recommended way to go.
You only need to download the configuration to another machine, in case the usb is destroyed some day. In that case, you get another usb, follow the steps you followed earlier and once you access the webui you simply restore the configuration. Then all will be as they were before...(The whole process takes about 10 minutes) . Having the full version is NOT recommended and having the embedded on an hdd is simply a waste of an hdd (the embedded version boots from the usb and is then loaded to RAM. The usb is not accessed again, except from the case the configuration changes.)
Now, regarding your users, they don't need to access NAS4Free webui. This machine will be a storage. Like if you had a network hdd. You will create the space and the shares and they will access the network disk to copy their files there. There is no normal case where an office user should access the webui- there is no reason nor a need for such thing.

I have a similar problem as Siraks except no disk errors. Load live usb from 1st usb, I put in the second usb and it is recognised, I choose 9, then 1 for the embedded version. I then get the option for the drive installation source and after pressing enter I am returned to the install/upgrade options screen...and so it continues....

The wiki page could use some updateing... For one, the physdiskwrite you are pointing to is old. The authors page has the lastest versions in both GUI and CLI. http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php

Also, it does not mention dd. From linux it is trivial to burn an image.
First extract the image since the XZ format is not supported by zcat. Then, insert a USB, and open a root shell.
(NOTE: I have two drives in my system, so the inserted USB stick is sdc.)

Thanks again for all solutions and help in the posts. I have the system running and working in my setup and disks mounted. Also have users added and folders shared through both PC and MAC. Very easy once it all works. Next up, some backup testing and getting the raid 5 set up and I'm good to go. Appreciate the posts. take care.

Siraks, how do you fix the looping issue? Use full or embedded version?

I currently run NAS4Free 9.2.0.1 (revision 972) x64-full; ALASKA A M I Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz 16894MiB non EEC RAM.

I try to fresh install 9.3.0.2.1283 Full in another TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 2T hhd at the same machine but after to confirm the USB as the source disk, it go back install/upgrade options screen again. Such installation USB drive is workable as I use it for another home server (AMD 64b CPU). Then I try to update to existing 972 hhd but then looping again. I use gpart but unable to show any hhd.

After reading through other sites, it seems the problem is USB install. My solution: On a windows laptop I burnt the live CD and then booted the laptop from it. When it had finished I put in the USB I wanted the system on and used option 9. Chose CD as source and USB as destination and the system was installed to the USB memory. Took out the USB and put it in my Dell tower and bingo, 9.3.0.2.1283 up and running. I Restored my config file and added SMART and no problems since...

Just try to install by USB and CD for another 64b intel pc but still loop. Will try another AMD64 tonight.

I also try to log in and check Disks|Management, after "Clear Config and import disks", shows the below:

Although N4F finds the hdd but misses when install (still looping).

It is still loop when install in my AMD64 pc. Installation can't find this Toshiba hdd (single disk in pc) and even can't Toshiba and another Seagate 640G hdd (two disks in pc) either in ide or ahci mode. However, if I remove this Toshiba disk, installation immediately find Seagate hdd (become normal!). It seems this Toshiba DT01ACA200 can't be boot disk of N4F. :?

I followed the steps posted by ChriZathens.
I had to go to the physdiskwrite website to get full instructions and they can help you better understand it.

Get a usb stick.
Go ahead and download NAS4Free-x64-embedded-9.3.0.2.1283.
Use physdiskwrite to write the image to the USB
Boot from the USB
Configure network from the console and you are ready to access the WebUI

Essentially I got an embedded version of NAS4Free and put that on a usb stick, after wiping it with physdiskwrite.
Once it was on there ( showed only 24mb on the usb stick )

I started up my PC and booted from USB, it loaded right away and there was no install involved since the image on the USB is NAS4Free.

Once it loaded, i selected IP configuration for device
then IP configuration
Set the static IP .

Once that is all set I went to the gui version on my regular use pc and went to the IP i set in the static IP section.

Loaded up the gui and went through settings getting my disk formatted and mounted, once that was done it was easy to get users and shares set up for both apple and pc.

there is a lot of information on google for that sort of thing so just make sure you find what you need for your specific needs after that.

Thanks. As we need install mysql and hylafax in N4F, we need to install full version. Your method may not be appropriate. I has successfully installed Full version in an old hdd other thanToshiba DT01ACA200. As most moderators suggest to use embedded version with jail. Will try later.

It seems USB 3.0 problem.
Try to disable USB 3.0 or use other USB 2.0 ports.

daoyama san,

I have used USB 2.0 ports only (both at front and back USB ports) and disable XHCI as I have seen you mentioned before. As 9.3.0.2.1310 is available, I shall reinstall it later and let you know again.

daoyama san,

I have upgraded to 1310 embedded. Same as my earlier findings, once Toshiba DT01ACA200 hdd is attached, the installation cannot find any disk to install. When I detach all Toshiba hdds, it can find the new usb drive for installation of 1310 embedded even same usb installation drive is plugged in same usb port (front).

I can confirm this bug.
I tryd to make a new install with 9.3.0.2.1349.
Installer doesnt find disk to instal,l as long as my toshiba disk is connected.
(Disk is found via wegbui, can be formated mount....)
I had this disk as systemdisk all the way back, so there seems to be a Problem with new 9.3 installer an toshiba hdds.
