Error: The changes could not be applied (error code 1).

Post by tobiasgardner »

Trying to remove / recreate everything related to a zpool I have (datasets, pools, vdevs) but I get this error message when I try to apply the changes in NAS4Free... Any ideas on how to move past this?

You have metadata on first & last sector, You need to delete ( wipe ) it, search in wiki for " dd " or " wipe " to find how.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Thanks for the hint... I have tried the dd command according to http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0129 but without any change.

It seems like there is some command lying around waiting to be applied in the system... Is there a way of cleaning that?

I have taken the configuration (xml) and removed all sections with regards to the disks I want to add...
I have used dd to wipe the disks.
I have rebooted the system...

Looking in Disks|ZFS|Pools|Management I see one (1) pool and that is the one I want to keep. But it also says that "The configuration has been changed.
You must apply the changes in order for them to take effect."

Problem "solved"... Reinstalled with build 175 and reloaded the manually corrected configuration file... No more pending actions :)

First late me state that your work to date is excellent. The whole system is fantasic.

I am running 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 531) and have this issue as well. I started off with the live usb image and tested. After installing on a junk ide drive I started over using the same 3x2TB drives. First importing, then full format, then create virtual device, then pool. This is where I hit the circle of death with "Error: The changes could not be applied (error code 1)".

Why should any metadata be lingering after a full format???????

I will next try the drive wipe and see if that fixes it. This is the 2nd setup I have built and to fix this the first time I ended up pulling the drives and mounting them in a dock and used ubuntu gparted to remove the partitions. This is wrong that after a full format that the system should see something that causes the system to hang up and refuse to move on.

It also appears that any reuse of any disk of any kind on any kind of raid will cause the whole system to be funky. Why not add either an option to wipe clean a drive or add that to the format script.

Update:

I used the wipe script and now the disks wont format. They show up in the status as unformated but when I go to format the are not available for format. Looks like now I have pull the disk and use ubuntu to clean them off. :x

Update 2:

My handy dandy ubuntu live usb was able to run gparted and create a new empty partition for each of the 3 x 2TB drives. It was not until I did reset back to factory defaults that the system was able to find and create a new raidz1. Now the system has the drives attached and working perfectly.
