Compatibility with Realtek RTL8111G

Post by gsola96 »

I've bought a mini-itx motherboard (Asrock AM1B-ITX) to run NAS4Free on it. The problem is that when I boot the system, I can install an Embedded copy of NAS4Free in a flashdrive but, when I set up the LAN Interface, I reboot the system and it appears the IP adress that I set previously but there's no way to enter the Web GUI or find the system in the Windows Network.

Could anyone tell me if it's a driver issue because it's not yet available or it's another thing?
(I'm a newbie in NAS4Free/FreeNAS)

Maybe if I wait a bit (maybe months) it would be a new version of NAS4Free with compatibility for this new NIC?

Thanks in advance.

from shell menu enter in shell option and type ifconfig and post result ( a photo is good).

remember that you need to configure option 1 in shell menu, reboot and then configure option 2 ( better DHCP if your router support it).

PD: Shell menu is "welcome To nas4Free and have 8 options, if have 9 options you are booting from liveUSB not from embeded nas4free.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't mentioned that I would like to have a LAN between the NAS and my laptop without needing any Router/switch because my router is not Gigabit. Tomorrow I'll post the photo of the menu.

PS: I'm completely sure that I'm not running the live USB because I had another old laptop with NAS4free and it doesn't show the 9th option.

I've found out that OpenMediaVault (based on Debian) is compatible with my Realtek integrated LAN card, but what keeps me out of installing it is that I have two Hard Disk Drives (500GB and 120GB) and I wouldn't like to waste the 120 gigs one just to run the OS.

I also noticed that when I configure the LAN interface, I could enter the WebGUI, then I reboot and after that, the LAN card doesn't respond, but the Welcome menu shows the IP I have configured before.

Here you are.

please try to configure your Ip like 192.168.0.250 instead of actual 192.168.0.1 perhaps your actual IP are duplicated in your network.

PD1: Home Ip normally is in the range 192.168.1.x not in 192.168.0.x , are you sure that your IP is OK and configure your LAN / ROUTEr /DNS properly?

PD3: To avoid duplicate IP problems better option is to use DHCP ( DHCP server normally is in your router).

To perform 1GB speed between yout laptop and you NAS use a intermediate 1GB switch ( only 11€ or 15€).

Final PD:
I also noticed that when I configure the LAN interface, I could enter the WebGUI, then I reboot and after that, the LAN card doesn't respond, but the Welcome menu shows the IP I have configured before.
this clearly indicate that your NIC is supported by BSD & Nas4Free and you configure something wrong by hand.

I've tried to configure the IP as 192.168.2.1 and on my laptop as 192.168.2.2. Both as static because what I'm trying to do is like a direct connection without needing any switch in the middle. Years ago I did it with an old laptop and it worked fine configuring these IPs and gateways as 192.168.2.1 in my computer and 192.168.2.2 in the NAS. I've tried OpenMediaVault and it's been running for half this day and I haven't experienced any problem; transfer rates of 100MB/s sustained and no problem with the NIC.

I don't know anything about drivers in Linux, Debian, BSD, etc. but I know that something goes wrong with the RTL8111G and NAS4Free/FreeNAS and that's not related to the configuration...

A few month ago I had a MSI J1800I with an integrated Realtek RTL8111G.
I do not get this board running with the integrated nic.

So, I go with the ASRock QC5000-ITX (got a RTL8111E)

Ok, finally find more info and yes, it's not supported by BSD 9.x = nas4Free 9.3

https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/realtek-8111g.41366/

Good news is that is support by BSD 10 ; so please can you test this experimental version?: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=5365

Unless you need ZFS, OMV is a good option for your board.

Thank you for the replies. I think I'll have OMV with JFS/XFS filesystem. Moreover, I'll try this one to see how it goes with this NIC.
