Hi,
my NAS4Free box runs headless, that means w/o keyboard and display. With the current configuration I have to attach at least a keyborad if booting the embedded version for the first time. Set LAN IP adress, enable DHCP, done.
It would be easier if DHCP was enabled by default. Could you please think about this?
Greetings,
Stefan

Is it wise to have a NAS box with a dynamic IP address? Seems easier to just connect a keyboard and monitor temporarily and set it up for 2 mins first.

Wouldn't you need the keyboard and screen anyway to install NAS4Free and configure the interfaces the first time you booted up anyway? Couldn't you just enable DHCP then?

I make full install on USB on my laptop, and then i boot from this USB on NAS. And the only thing I need to connect keyboard and monitor to make LAN settings, but I make all this settings "by default", pressing "enter" "enter" and so on.
It would be nice to make DHCP by default.
I wanted to create such topic few days ago, but thought that I'm the only one with this problem

Why not?kernow wrote:Is it wise to have a NAS box with a dynamic IP address? Seems easier to just connect a keyboard and monitor temporarily and set it up for 2 mins first.
* you can access the box by hostname
* if you don't like dhcp you can switch to static IP later over the webgui

No, just put the embeded Version on a USB Drive, put it into the NAS box and your installation is done.SlowMo wrote:Wouldn't you need the keyboard and screen anyway to install NAS4Free and configure the interfaces the first time you booted up anyway? Couldn't you just enable DHCP then?

Re: Enable DHCP by default on enbeded
By default the system use IP 192.168.1.250
I will not thange that to DHCP to avoid some other problems.
Also most users use static ip's and not DHCP in their networks.

Re: Enable DHCP by default on enbeded
I use DHCP on all my servers. The DHCP server is then setup to give each server the same IP address every time. Easy.
I agree about not making DHCP the default though.
