pata adapter not recognized during install

Post by uberon »

Hi,

I'm having a problem installing NAS4Free onto an older (understatement :P) Compaq workstation AP200 (P3 750MHz 384MB RAM).

The LiveCD boots fine and N4F runs okay from it but when trying to install full or embeded the same error arises; "Failed to detect CDROM drive". Also when logging in with webGUI the attached hard and cdrom drives are not recognised. The adapter in question is 82371AB/EM/MB PIIX4 IDE and driver used (in Debian if that helps) is ata_piix. My assumption is that the controller is simply not supported by the LiveCD.

Since I am pretty new to Linux/UNIX I was wondering if there is a way to add those drivers to the LiveCD or later when LiveCD boots through shell.

I also want to install N4F onto an HDD because the MBO in question has USB 1.0 and doesn't seem to even support booting from USB.

Thanks in advance for your answers :)

Perhaps You must play with device.hints , see: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=830
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

some bios will not boot from expansion card sata or pata or must be specifically directed there
some will only boot from the primary on board IDE PATA cable [or floppy]
consumer hardware bios did not include a lot of "what if" code
keep boot devices on the primary MOBO PATA and it will likely recognize secondary or expansion card pata and sata drives while booting

on real old hardware I now have what I consider the definitive answer
where the bios is so inept that it only boots from C or floppy
use another computer that will boot CD and install the embedded OS on to a small Hdd
use the small Hdd as the embedded boot and install the drive but do not mount
with the spin down set to 5 minutes it sleeps until awaken for a configuration change then sleeps again
shown here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvguvOwi ... e=youtu.be
I found this old Hdd in a large printer

or spend $25 and forget the spin down

I had a similar problem: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=191

Try each of these changes one at a time:

1. Use a different CD-ROM.
2. Use a different IDE cable.
3. Use a different IDE port (Primary/Secondary), don't forget about primary/slave jumper.

PS
there is nothing wrong with live CD and floppy config
but if your older hardware will boot from USB ...ware
some 1.0 usb do not like large usb drives
the 966 P-III mentioned in the test above will not boot USB
and will not usb store the config
unless the usb is of an early small issue
[512 Mb works, 2Gb does not]
I think this has to do with newer USB hardware on board drivers
as opposed to earlier usb hardware conforming to 1.0 standards
