Damaged Raid5: can't insert replacement disk

Post by Fabien »

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this here because I need to get back on tracks before upgrading to Nas4Free, and the freenas forums are dead. I hope it's ok.

I've been running a freenas box for just under a year (last known uptime was 326 days, yay!) and unfortunately, the box suffered from a power outage last week while I was on vacation. It was plugged to an UPS but since I wasn't around when the power surge happened, it dried out and let the Freenas box die.

Anyways, when I got back home, I quickly figured out that one of the three disks that compose my RAID5 array died in the process (little fellow had over 25,000 hours running time, it was time he died). I forced the mount on two disks to proceed an emergency backup, and everything went fine.

Time to take care of the array, I went and bought a replacement disk, but the array is not rebuilding itself.

The RAID5 is composed of:

- dev/ad4
- dev/ad6
- dev/ad10

I've replaced ad10, and formated it as SoftwareRaid, but it doesn't show up in the provider list. I thought "well, let's insert it manually", and something strange shows up in the Raid5/Tools window:

ad8 ? No idea where that's coming from.

Even stranger, when I go to the Raid5 management section:

As you can see, nothing appears.

If anyone has any clue as what's happening here, it'd be nice as I feel a bit helpless here. I'd rather avoid having to rebuild the whole array, because even though I have a backup, this is not how things should be.

Thanks in advance everyone !

Do You insert/ atach new disk on other Sata port?

If no ( If atached to same Sata port than old damaged disk) revise boot order in Bios because BSD assing disk using Bios info, If You change order in Bios , You change adax order too.
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

I'm having this exact same problem scenario with 0.9.0.1 - 573.

3-disk GEOM RAID-5 set, one disk failed.

1. I logically removed the old disk, and shut the system down.
2. physically replaced the disk with one of identical size.
3. restarted NAS4Free
4. Formatted the replacement disk as SoftRaid
5. Went in through the Disks|Software RAID|RAID5|Tools menu to run the 'insert' command on the replacement disk, only to find that the replacement disk is not listed on the drop-down menu.

6. Spent an hour troubleshooting and posting screenshots and patebins in the #nas4free channel on freenode, came up with nothing, and was told to post on the forums, so here I am.

tl;dr The replacement disk shows up under Disks|Management as online, and formatted as SoftRaid. However, it will not populate on the dropdown menu under RAID5|tools, and I cannot insert it.

Update:

I sshed in and manually ran

Code: Select all

graid5 insert pool0 ada1
And the array started rebuilding immediately. This looks like a GUI bug to me.

Hello Crypto and Fabien,

Everything I write here will apply to both of you unless I note otherwise.

Welcome to the NAS4Free forum. Below is information you may find helpful.

Please read and follow the Forum Rules & Guidelines and the FAQs.
By doing so you will:
  • Understand what information you should provide when you ask a question or report a problem/bug. By providing all information upfront you will get faster and better answers; that's what you want right?
  • Find the answer to your problem in the FAQs or use the Advanced search to search the forum.
  • Help us understand your problem and allow us to provide an accurate answer/solution without asking additional questions.
  • Help the community by keeping the forum clean, focused and professional.
  • Remember to use WebGUI Tab> Help|Report Generator when creating new topics/threads.
  • If you have not, then please read the latest Setup & User Guide.
The procedures for replacing failed SoftRAID1 and SoftRAID5 array members is well documented in both the FAQs and the Setup & User Guide. If you read any of the documentation then you did not understand it, please go back and read it again. Both of you made the same mistake. Nowhere does it say you should format the replacement disk. In fact the documentation requires the replacement disk be wiped clean. Instructions for wiping disks can also be found in the FAQs.
The reason the new disks do not show up in WebGUI is because it is smart enough to know that a disk formatted SoftRAID should not be added to an existing array. This is no bug.

This
4. Formatted the replacement disk as SoftRaid
is not a step in the replacement procedure and I don't understand where you got it from.

@Fabien - It looks like you are running 0.7 so you should have no problem properly replacing the disk.To get everyting up and running properly again please:
  1. Remove the new replacement disk.
  2. Wipe it clean.
  3. Replace the disk by exactly following the steps you can find in the FAQs.
@Crypto - Even though you have manually inserted the disk and it is working this can cause problems in the future. There is no bug in the WebGUI. As I explained above it is correct that a SoftRAID formatted disk not show up on that tab. Things you can do manually will work, but the WebGUI in many cases has no way of knowing what you did, so to avoid problems in the future you should:
  1. Remove the new replacement disk.
  2. Wipe it clean.
  3. Replace the disk by exactly following the steps you can find in the FAQs.
Plese post here again if you have more questions about this.

Regards,
Al
