Tip using 3TB+ disks on old pc running SIL3114

Post by bigblok403 »

Just some info for anyone else that might have this type of scenario. I am using and older PC for Nas4Free (Athlon XP IDE only motherboard) and I'm using 4 SATA ports on the add-on SIL3114 controller. Up until last week I was only using up to 1.5TB hard drives. I purchased some WD Red 3TB drives and when I went to format them, format would bomb out and show bad sectors after getting close to the 2TB mark everytime, only allowing me to use this drive as a 2TB drive max. The drive would also then disappear under drive management until a reboot was performed. I have read many other posts saying that this controller won't work for drives over 2TB drives. I threw the drives on another newer system with a NAS4Free flash drive boot just to make sure the disks were actually good and I was able to format them to the full 3TB UFS on the newer system. To my surprise after putting the formatted drives back on the old PC with the SIL3114 controller, I was able to use the 3TB drives and they were now recognized properly. Just to make sure I filled all the space up on the drives just to make sure it still was able to use all the space properly. This might not work for every SIL3114 controller, but give it a try if you have the same problem.

Maybe you just don't have the latest firmware of this controller or the siis driver is not loaded: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?que ... &sektion=4
In the configuration you describe, I would not have trust in the system and switch to a mainboard which supports the drives :-/
