My setup is: Asrock C2550D4I with 4 hdds connected to the Marvell controller (named ada0 - ada3) and a hot-swap slot connected to one of the C2550 sata3 ports usually empty.
When i insert a hdd in the hot swap this is detected by N4F but it became the new ada3 disk OVERRIDING the previous one and making my pool status changes to DEGRADED.
In my opinion it's a strange behaviour, i can't figure why instead create a new ada4 device, the ada3 device gets destroyed
Have you got any hint or explanation?

Re: Asrock C2550D4I hot plug overrides current devices
it has nothing to with the mainboard, it is already discussed here:

Re: Hot plug overrides current devices aka device name shifting
Thanks crowi for pointing me those resources, i've renamed the topic according to FAQ article
Actually i'm not experiencing a shift in the names of hdds because the old ada3 gets (i'm quoting the system logs) destroyed and becomes undetectible until i reboot the whole system but i belive that labeling can be the solution to my problems

Re: Hot plug overrides current devices aka device name shifting
not all controllers in combination with their freebsd drivers have support for hotplugging.
your board has 3 different controllers.
have you tried the intel one?

Re: Hot plug overrides current devices aka device name shifting
This is the current connection scheme, i think i've already connected the hot plug slot to the intel controller
