CIFS, OSX Yosemite and NetBios.

Post by phin »

So I came across an odd error yesterday, that I am hoping to resolve. I found a workaround but let me explain and perhaps someone would have some insight..

I currently have nas4free 10 installed in a KVM instance on proxmox, (I have tested this with nas4free stable as well) that I am passing a LSI card to and using to share my media vault to other VM's via a dedicated Layer 2 network, with nfsd and to the whole lan, via the Lan port, via Samba. NFSD is set to only share to the dedicated Layer 2 network.

I have worked out permissions issues, and etc.. I have everything set to Read only, unless you are logged in. chmod of files and everything is working as expected. Browsable.. etc.

So the issue I have is as follows. When I set the NETBios name to the same as the hostname, and I go and browse network shares. I am met with a white box, server looking icon, that states the host name. When I click on said hostname, I am met with an Unable to Connect error. If I directly connect to the server, via smb://servername, I am able to log in and browse at will.

After I log in, I am able to click on the whitebox and see the folder names. Interesting. But if I click a folder, I cannot see the contents.

Its almost as if its trying to hit it via NFS? I am not sure. I did disable NFS and still no luck. I have tried disabling Zeroconf, still no luck.

Now. If I change the netbios name... I am able to see the share, with the new name, in the network browser and connect as expected. I still also see the white box, with the host name and still get a connection error.. This is a workaround, but I would like to keep the netbios name, the same as the hostname.

I would love to hear any and all suggestions.

Thank you.

In previous versions of OS X I had a similar issue - the reason was that there are multiple shares:

AFP, Netbios/CIFS, NFS

And you could not tell what the icon represented - I solved this by naming each service with a postscript, and there was one that never worked and i could not reconcile which service it was meant to advertising so i could reconcile it.

So its all fixed now. How? With Yosemite and Nas4free 10 all the advertising is broken except CIFS. Probably not the answer you are looking for!
