Emby Server

Post by geaves »

I have installed http://emby.media/ inside a jail, at first glance it's very similar to Plex, but utilises DLNA rather than UPnP, had to run FreeBSD update to get it install, (I am currently on 9.2.0.1 (revision 972)) this updates FreeBSD to release 9.2-release-P17. Using the instructions from the Emby website installation was straightforward, although I did not edit ffmpeg. The only other editing I had to do was the hosts file inside the Emby jail I created and added the ip address and host name of the jail, this was because the web wizard that starts could not resolve Emby.local.

This is Ok for me as all my movies are mp4 and can be played on my PS3, I am still awaiting there App for streaming to iOS but there is already one available for Android.

Smart idea!

I had made mediabrowser installation at nas4free jail at January (Google translation of my Russian blogpost https://translate.google.ru/translate?s ... edit-text=)

but I had used my router's dns server to resolve jail name to IP. Your way is smarter...

NB emby is rebranding of mediabrowser, by the way
http://emby.media/community/index.php?/ ... cing-emby/

So iOS client for mediabrowser exists, but one is not free.

I had tested both plex and emby at my nas4free, and found a lot of emby advantages, fist of all far smarter media collections. Say, if you are Star Treck fan, you cold have Star Trek as
- dozen of movies
- dozen of tv shows, with a few seasons each
- soundtracks
- posters
and this is a quantum mechanics for plex and not a problem for emby
http://emby.media/community/index.php?/ ... structure/

but there are two major problems with emby
- no Russian kinopoisk plugin (not a problem for English speaking folks of course)
- server could not work with huge libriaries
I have for testing 2Tb flac library and had feed it to emby. After it was swallowed (long time, but who cares) I had tried use emby. But bot android app and web access becames extermelly slowly. So I had returned to plex

By the way there is bad problem with plex at jail - DLNA server diapears short time after plex start (no such problem with emby). But I had addressed the problem with installation plex to chroot on nas4free embeded, witout jail

I wondered that as it's not available on their site yet, and the Android one is a purchase as well. Have tested VLC but this does not stream very well the movie breaks up, but you can download the movie and VLC plays it fine + VLC also uses folder art and just lists the movie rather than the content of the movie folder.

Thanks for the links re Emby, I may have to change the naming convention on my movie folders to include the date as I would like to sort by date released.
By the way there is bad problem with plex at jail - DLNA server diapears short time after plex start (no such problem with emby). But I had addressed the problem with installation plex to chroot on nas4free embeded, witout jail
That has not happened to me I can always see Plex on iOS, but the PS3 lists it as nas4free, and the downside of Plex is that it just lists the movie folders on the PS3 which means you have to scroll the whole content, whereas Emby will sort.
I have for testing 2Tb flac library
That's a lot of music.....I just want something to serve my movies.

The only other difference I have found is the web clients, Plex has a habit of going out of sync and Emby wants to play some of my movies at 420p. I have posted the 420 issue in the Emby forums and see if get a response.

At present I'm just testing to find a media server that will do what I want to achieve, and the more I test the more I am looking at another machine to run Lubuntu and Kodi, because Kodi works just as well as a server as it does a client.

I have Kodi/XBMC player on iPad (need jailbreak) and Android tablet - best player I've seen on mobile.
There is discussion at comments at my blog about best mediaserver. Folks are usind Kodi are happy with it as player, even on Raspberry-PI. But as mediaserver most recomends Plex.

I would agree with that, but the PS3 whilst it can see a Plexserver it does not display any poster or folder art, I know there must be a workaround, whereas with Kodi it's fine I get a poster/folder displayed for the film, but saying that it just might be worth trying a Plex pass and trying the each addon.
BTW, I followed your instructions for Plex in chroot, works fine but I had to add some port settings in my router for the PS3 to see the Plex Server, but at least it 'stays alive'.

I didn't even know others where setting Emby up in Nas4Free. I gave it a shot on my own and ran into the same problem as the IP did with Emby.Local. The one inssue I am running into is keeping the server up-to-date. The ports tree is a version or so behind what Emby is pushing out. With this software being very early in the stages I think having the most up-to-date version is a good thing. Also since I've upgraded to the Beta N4F 10.1 I've run into issues with TheBrig and wanting to build ports. Other than that I've got Kodi/Emby working....sort of....still throws errors and really only testing it right now.

Has anyone had there emby server stop randomly and need restarting? I've had trouble having emby even stay alive all day. This proves a problem when it shutsdown because I'm not always home to restart the service.
