rocketraid 620

ive added this controller to my box the disks show up in disk management
but do not appear in the "Format" menu

do i have to load a driver for this controller or something?
why isnt it letting me format the disks ?
it wont let me select them to add them to a ZFS pool either

i see now that its added the rocketraid devices before the native motherboard sata ports
becoming ada0 + ada1..
and this has changed the ada# numbers of the other devices..
my current ZFS pool consists of 3 x 1TB and was set up on (ada0,ada1,ada3) ada2 is a damaged drive i will be removing from the box
why isnt it adding the rocketraid AFTER the other ones to be ada4 + ada5??
this is really bad.. it should be smart enough to know i just added this controller and not change all the numbers of the other disks!!!!!
for example under the format menu it shows me the option of formatting ada4 + ada5 but it lists them as the disks from my existing ZFS POOL!

this is a commmon occurrence with nas4free it seems.. why does it so easily get confused as to which disk is which?
i almost lost 800gb of data just the other day because i stuck in an new WDBLack drive and tried to format it .. the ui showed i was selecting the WD black drive.. and it formatted one of my drives from my UFS mirror!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is this a ui bug?

the disks shown in my format menu shown in this attached image:
formatMenu.jpg
these drives are the members of my ZFS Pool!! THEY SHOULD NOT BE SHOWING THESE NAMES IN THE FORMAT MENU!!

here u see the drives i have and how its added the new drives as ADA0 + ADA1 offsetting the numbers of the drives that were there previously

is that what u guys would reccommend?

https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/ha ... dding.html

i followed the directions here to format from the shell command line interface
but the web gui seems to not recognize it or be aware of it and is still reporting the disk as Unknown or unformatted

could it be that the first drive connected to the 620 being formatted as EXFAT with content is causing this?
or is it incompatibility of the controller itself?

do i have to do this to wipe it before i can format it?
http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0129

to test this theory i am rebooting and disconnecting the drive that is exfat with content to see if that will let me format the brand new empty drive

removing the other drive did not allow me to format..
it seems whatever is connected to this controller refuses to show up in the format menu!!
it only shows my usb embedded drive in the format menu!!!!

ive just replaced the 620 with a sata150 SIL3112 which i thought would work easily but its doing the same thing where its offset my original ADA #'s of my drives and it doesnt allow me to format with the format menu either..

the gui is giving me the option now to format the drives that are the members of my ZFS Pool
im trying to format 2 x 2TB to make a mirror and its showing me my 1TB disks that are part of my ZFS raidz

this is really bad

i guess, seeing as there is noon else here to help me, the only solution is to figure out which ports are which and rewire the drives to the proper ADA # port ?????

Well you are to impatient. A lot of the People here are in a Europe timezone and asleep.
Anyway with all your drives connected you need to import the drives under disk management and sync the zfs array under the zfs settings.

i labeled all my drives sata ports with stickers to show which one is which + ive rearranged it so that the drives that were showing in the format menu (shown in image above) are the drives that i want to format

this didnt work otu exactly as i planned .. basically u have to make sure that all the members of the original array are on port numbers lower then the ones that the new members are going to be on..

i had to switch ada2 + ada3 to get the 3 raidz members to be on 0,1,2 .. now i think i will be ok and able to format 3 + 4 and make a new array. im hoping

after many many reboots i finally connected my drives in a way that it let me format my 2 x 2tb drives..
ive formatted them software raid... created a RAID1 array.. formatted UFS advanced 4k sectors..
ive now dropped to CLI and i'm using :

rsync -a -v /mnt/vPool/vDataset /mnt/2tbMirror

and its copying my files from the RAIDZ1 zfs dataset to the new UFS RAID1 2tb mirror
now i can sleep...

nas4free is a painintheass.
u guys really gotta increase the intelligence of this software

You just observed the "device name shifting syndrome"
instead of putting stickers with ada1, ada2, etc, you should put stickers with the serial# on the drives, especially if you tend to tinker on the configuration.

As I see it, it is a most stable and reliable OS, it just needs some basic understanding of how it works.

Yeap... you keep doing it again, lol...
Just for the sake of it

Your first post was 5am (my local time) - we are sleeping... b0ssman and crowi are in Germany, so it was even earlier for them...
Anyways the correct thing to do when adding disks is what b0ssman proposed.
And the fact that disks keep changing is not N4F fault, it how FreeBSD handles the sata connections (the one scanned first at boot takes ada0 etc)
And it is not only for freebsd - I remember my linux server stopped booting when I added an additional disk a few years back. In that case I had to find the uuid of each disk and tell fstab that / is not /dev/sda but uuid something.
In n4f you only need to import disks again (easily recognizable because in disk management wrongly identified disks are highlighted red)
Unless you have a very old release of n4f.
post your specs for that matter, or write it in your signature so that we know what we are talking about...
