USB Ethernet Adapter

Post by Alice »

I've just started experimenting with Gigabit USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter. This seems to work well.
Does anyone know of any potential problems with USB Ethernet adapters either 2.0 or 3.0).

Thanks.

using usb 2.0 as gigabit will limit your max speed to about 35 mbyte/sec.

what is your reason for wanting to use one?.
if you cant expand your nas any other way be advised that using usb to attach hard drives is highly not recommended.

Thanks for your reply. I am not attaching hard drives. This is a USB network adapter.
I would like to use it in case I have onboard network card problems.

well there is no automatic failover with different network cards.
there is lagg which needs 2 network cards of the same speed (and pref type)

is there no pcie 1x slot in your nas free?

Yes, there is a pcie 1x slot. I was thinking of disabling the onboard one
and use only the USB one. This PC is new and still under guarantee and so
I can't really tamper with it. The onboard one doesn't really work well with nas4free.

which manufacturer did you buy a pc from that tells you your warranty is voided when you install an extension card?

if they did i would strongly advice never to buy from them again.

Zoostorm. Usually manufacturers void the warranty if something else is installed.
But I'll check with them and let you know if this is really the case. Thanks.

I think this should be the best way:

Add a Intel® EXPI9301CT network card if you have pci-e slot free
System specs: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 -embedded on Samsung 860 EVO 256GB and Supermicro X10SL7-F w / Bios v3.2, IPMI v.03.86 / CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz - 32GB Crucial DDR3L 1600mhz ECC 1.35v , LSI 2308 on PH20.00.07.00 IT mode, Storage: 5x Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) raidz

Development system is same system in virtualbox.

I checked with the manufacturer - adding components will not invalidate the warranty unless there is damage caused to the system resulting from adding the component. So, I will try the Intel® EXPI9301CT network card as suggested above.
Many thanks.
