Wireless Adapter

Post by Onichan »

I am trying to get my wireless adapter, TL-WN722N, to work with the latest NAS4Free and after researching it seems like Linux support for my adapter is done through http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k_htc which apparently for BSD is ath(4). So I was looking at the current kernel and it seems like ath is already built into it, but it still doesn't see mine. Then my question is does the build use the latest version of ath(4)?

If so then I guess I need to load the firmware according to that linuxwireless.org site, but how is that done in NAS4Free? I have the htc_9271.fw, but don't know where to put it and if I need to manually load it somehow. When I do a pciconf my adapter doesn't show up, but doing a dmesg it does show in the log that it sees a usb atheros adapter but nothing happens and with it not showing up in pciconf I can't attempt to configure the interface because it doesn't exist.

HI,
did you ever got this solved?
I also need to use a wifi connection due to some space restrictions and I notice similar problems.
If you have a solution, could you please post it?
Also if you have an alternate solution (different wifi adapter...)
Thanks
Bacco

I never was able to get it working. It was a while ago, but I remember the OS was able to see the hardware, but I couldn't figure out how to get wireless enabled. I had found a post about somebody talking about additional kernel modules needed to be loaded for wireless to work on FreeNAS and I tried that on NAS4Free, but I couldn't get it to work. I had took the modules from BSD 9.0 which was what NAS4Free was using at the time I was testing. I'm not sure if I needed more modules or if I needed to load some firmware. It would be nice if somebody that builds NAS4Free could try adding the wireless modules and let us know how you load firmware for a device. I know it should be possible though.

Thanks a lot for your reply Onichan.
I agree with you, it would be nice to have Wireless modules.
If I ever manage it or I found solutions, I will post them here.

I can understand that a big argument about wifi is that a NAS should be wired and/or WiFi is unsecure under many aspect (And I could not agree more to that)... BUT sometimes we dont have a choice!!! Specially when is not a professional infrastructure we are in and we have space issue!!!
Lets hope for improvements on this area!
Bye

I know this is kind of old but.. if you have another computer with wireless then you can set it up as a bridge to pass the wifi connection through the lan into the nas.... or even simpler... buy one of those wireless expander boxes... it plugs into a power outlet and usually has just one ethernet port on it.. It picks up the wireless signal from your house and passes it through the ethernet. Not as ideal or cheap as just adding a wireless card in your nas but it would do the trick.

Its something sort of like this.. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... &A=details
They make them in all different brands and vary on price. This one is only 10/100 but im sure they have gigabit ones.. though your wifi connection would never see those speeds anyways.
