MOVE JAILS TO ANOTHER DISK DRIVE..

Post by Transistor1 »

Hi all... i m new to this forum and i m facing a problem..

First of all i m running NAS4Free 9.2.0.1 - Shigawire..
I have Thebrig installed and i created 3 Jails ( Owncloud, Serviio, Sabnzbd ), which are working properly thanks to the guides of this forum :D

Problem is..

I have all these jails installed on an external usb HDD which i use for storing data ( movies, music, photos etc) too..
All i want to do is to move jails folder from the external HDD, to an internal Sata2 disk (which i ll be using ONLY for storing existing and new jails) but without losing functionality..

Is it possible, to do this without complications? A wizard, suggestion or anything?

Thanks for any answer.. :)

When you delete jail, thebrig make archive for it, placed into thebrig/work folder. You can copy/move this archive and extract as jail source.
You need only save your setup (Edit page)
Home12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7091)/ x64-embedded on AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7 A88XM-PLUS/ 16G RAM / UPS Ippon Back Power Pro 600
Lab 12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7091) /x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3220 CPU @ 3.30GHz / H61M-DS2 / 4G RAM / UPS Ippon Back Power Pro 600

Thank you for the answer Alexey..
1 more question.. Do i have to tell the OS where the new folder has moved?
Is there a possibility to have trouble with paths? Serviio for example sees external directories, where i store movies etc, through fstab inside its jail..
Can you guide me with some necessary steps, not to mess things up? Total newbie here..

Thanks for any help..

Pretty sure TheBrig will address the jail paths issue, however third party installed software inside the jails will not, you need to update the media server paths manually.

I used to do this before through the WebGUI on Plex, so I think it should be similar on Serviio, if you can't change the paths through the WebGUI, stop the service and look for the Serviio configuration file.

Thank you JoseMR...
I made the decision to leave the system as is finally, cause i spent a lot of time and effort to build it, with the 3 Jails.. I don't want to screw things up..
If i want more space, i can use the internal sata 2 disk, as data disk.. A little weird though.. :)

One more question..
Is there a speed decrease in loading time, when loading Jails stuff from the external USB 2.0, in comparison with a sata2 disk?
I think that the only disadvantage, with my setup, is the decrease in speed..

Thanks again, for all help..

Storage devices through USB have I/O performance limit/penalty, unlike internal SATA connectors, so slow loading times and throughput will be noticeable.

Also running/putting data onto an external USB device is generally unreliable and dangerous, installing data disk inside the server is the safest option.

I registered just to warn OP, backup-backup-backup.

Earlier versions of TheBrig did bad things to your data while attempting to move jails.
If you installed prior to say, first quarter of this year, make sure to update The Brig before attempting to do anything, and backup backup backup!

I haven't tried the process since the patches were added, but I'm told by the developers that they put it on a diet. (doesn't eat data anymore)
