ZFS question

Post by juji »

I just reinstalled after a mb/cpu/ram upgrade nas4free and now i get a wrong zfs Raidz-2 dimension, I 'm using 6x2TB drives, meaning 8TB usable space, but I get this:

Image

Maybe now Nas4free shows the total dimension of raid (12TB) ? Is It a bug or It is just normal?

10.9TB seems to be the total space available in the pool, including parity. The other two numbers I can't be sure since I don't know how much data you have in you pool.

Please post the result of the following commands:

Code: Select all

df -h

Code: Select all

zpool list

Code: Select all

zfs list
NAS1: Pentium E6300 - Abit IP35Pro - 4GB RAM - Backup of NAS2
NAS2: Core 2 Quad Q9300 - Asus P5Q-EM - 8GB RAM
pyload - flexget - tvnamer - subsonic - owncloud - crashplan - plex media server

it is a raidz-2, so 6x2TB = 8 TB available space

That is the theoretical capacity, but the disks are actually smaller than 2TB once formatted and when you add the two parity disks it add up to 10.9TB which is correctly reported by zpool list (each disk has about 1.8TB of space available).

Without the parity disks you have about 7.2 TB of usable space (correctly reported by zfs list).

Yes it is, I think I have the correct answer for you:
If you buy a 2TB harddisk, this means you get 2,000,000,000,000 bytes of storage. (x6 = 12,000,000,000,000)
But the gui displays it in TiB (Tebibytes) which is: 1 tebibyte = 1099511627776 bytes
If you divide 12,000,000,000,000 / 1099511627776 you get 10.91 TiB.

tldr: 12TB = 10.91 TiB

Aditionally you have a raidz2 which means you had 7.28 TiB free space, but you filled it with 7.12TiB of data which leaves you with 5.57 GiB of free space.

I think the user interface in this section needs an update to clarify the unit used, because in the RAM section my RAM is correctly reported as 1797MiB

PS: I might add another conclusion of mine, that the first number "total" is the available space including parity, the "used" is the data written without parity and the last "free" is the space available

I can confirm this is totally normal.
Currently have 4x2TB in raidz1 Total size is 7.28TB or about 1.82TB/drive.
