(SOLVED) Windows 10 Preview can't browse or see NAS4Free shares

Post by pokeyboy »

I've installed Windows 10 Preview builds on two computers. Both installations seem to be working very well. However, I can’t browse the shares on any of my N4F boxes. I can FTP to the N4F without a problem. Also, the Windows 10 Media Player connects to N4F minidlna server and plays music.
Windows 7 works fine with N4F. I’ve tried to compare all of the network settings between Win7 and Win10. I can’t seem to find any differences.

Has anybody been down this road yet?

Hey b0ssman,

Thanks for you help.

After some Googling and your suggestion, I thought sure the SMB3 was the answer to my problem. Unfortunately, switching from SMB2 to SMB3 did not resolve the problem. From what I have read, SMB2 and SMB3 should be compatible. The client/server should Auto-Negotiate the connection.

With Windows Explorer, I can see the N4F server, but can't see the share. All is fine from Windows 7 with SMB3 on N4F.

I'm hoping someone out there has tried Windows 10 Preview with NAS4Free. I'm curious if anyone has had success connecting.

Thanks again,

Doug

it's because Win10 insists on an authenticated SMB login. You can disable it by creating the following value (a DWORD):

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\AllowInsecureGuestAuth

Set the value to 1 , it should work straight away then.
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Your suggestion really looked like the fix! I made the addition to the registrey without any problems (on both Win10 computers). Re-booted them, but still the same problem. I'm running the very latest Win10 preview build, 10166. In the forum, which you referenced, they are referring to earlier builds.

With the release date of Win10 coming very soon, I would be surprised they would still have this type of bug.

This isn't any "mission critical" issue for me. I'm just playing around and getting acquainted with Win10. I'll probably just keep my ears open and browse the forums for any news of this issue.

Oh.. one other tidbit of information. I have a USB drive attached to my wireless router. With Win10, I can connect to the shares on it without any problem.

Thanks again for you help!

can you try adding your mslive user and password as a user in nas4free and allowing that user access to the share?

I think I have finally solved the problem. At this point everything seems to be working with both the Win7 and Win10 clients.

Solution:
Firstly, the user needs to be signed into Win10 with a password, not a pin number. If you sign in with a pin number, you will not even see the NAS devices on your network. That's with Windows Explorer anyway.

Secondly, In NAS4Free, I added smb ports = 445 to the Auxiliary parameters under CIFS/SMB. That was the magic!

So at this point Win10 will connect to my N4F boxes using either SMB2 or SMB3.

Hey b0ssman, thanks for following this thread and your good suggestions!

Does this apply when windows 10 can access the CIFS shares by ip address, but not by name (e.g. //N4F_C2QUAD) ?

I can see the server in file explorer, but when I try to open it I get a "Network Path Not Found" with 0x80070035.

is "smb ports = 445" exactly what goes into the CIFS auxiliary parameters ?

Thanks.

ok i just upgraded my machine to windows 10.

i did not need to add the smb port = 445.

however i had some problems because of the windows live id.

to be able to log into samba with a password i had to create windows creations.

to get there press windows key and type "Credential Manager"

select windows credentials. and press add a windows credential.

put in the server name i.e "nas4free"
and username and password.

after that it automatically logged in with those credentials (dont connect to the share before that)

So I have tried every suggestion in this forum with no luck... I try mapping the network drive, changing my user to a local user and making the names / passwords match, creating a credential using my username both as 1000 and Chad, edited the registry, nothing is working... I can access from linux mint without issue.

OK so I feel dumb, somehow I missed the step of actually sharing using the shares tab of the Services|CIFS/SMB|Shares page... Everything seems to be working now.
